I bought a re-build 686 a few weeks back. The serial number is RCSO-18. I'm pretty sure that stands for County Sheriffs Office, but how about the R?

Probably an LE trade-in...could have come from anywhere an agency traded revolvers for autos with a distributor or dealer. If you got it from a dealer and he will tell you which distributor he got it from, they can probably tell you what you want to know...otherwise it's anyone's guess.

Edited to say that IF this is the actual serial # stamped on the butt of the gun by S&W, they should be able to tell you...if they will.

Roy Jinks, S&W's historian will provide you with all the information on your gun. There is a form that you can download from their site. Fill out the info and send it with a check to Mr. Jinks. He's a grand guy and tries very hard to please. Get his info now while he's still around. His knowledge is irreplaceable.
