Does this new S&W 5.7 pistol take full size optics like a SRO or RMR or does it take the micro red dots only?  Do I need a red dot plate for this gun?

Anyone?

All the Youtube reviews say it takes the smaller ones because the slide is thin.

My local shop finally got in their first M&P 5.7 pistol. I was the first one to look at it... And... I found the grip too big for my smaller hands. Too big, back to front. I had a feeling this would happen. But as they advertised it as the thinnest 5.7 grip (side to side), I thought the thinness MIGHT make up for the longer cartridge sized grip... I had to try it, because the gun is really interesting....

2 handed, it works. 1 handed, the grip is too long. So, while I wanted to buy it, I passed. I have had to sell too many guns over the years because they were too big for my hands... They always seem like they will work while I am at the gun store... But after several range trips, I always see the truth. Especially any 45 that isn't a 1911....

I also finally looked at a 2011. I had been told the grip was fatter than a G17, so I never bothered to look at them... I didn't want to find out it worked, and then I would want to spend a ton of money for a nice one... It's "okay" in the grip size, but is on the border of what fits my hands.

So, no purchase today

So I got another one, this one does have the extractor. Mounted an EPS on it, don’t care for the gap in the front/back but at least it had the lugs at the front. Fired 2 mags out of it when I got home, going to shoot it more tomorrow.

I can see now why it reccomends the micro dots. That optic is hanging off the sides.

There goes ARF costing me more money again. That said, before I commit I need to do some reading on how consistent and concentric these 2pc barrel designs are. I’m concerned with using my Sparrow on one and would probably limit suppressed use to an Omega 9k for the extra wiggle room.

I mean I’ve been using a dedicated 5.56 can on it (heavy OG YHM turbo) and I’ve had no issues.

Honest outlaw on YouTube said no plates are needed to mount an optic on this pistol. Others say you need plates. And what screws do you use?

No plates for the EPS, 407k/507k. I use the screws that came with the eps(the longer of the two).

Hopefully someone that has one can confirm but S&W sent me this:

"The 13347 is cut for the Holosun 507k.
Thank you, SWCS"

So that means it should fit the 407k, 507k, EPS Carry, and EPS without the need for any plate. I'm pretty sure that's basically the RMSc footprint.

It seems like mounting optics on pistols has become very confusing as everyone has their own footprint and mounting plates.

Newbie question but let’s say I purchase a 507K. Doe’s holosun supply the correct length screws for the S&W57 or does Smith provide them?

I don't have a M&P 5.7 (yet), or a 507k. But I did just pick up an optics ready M&P 9 and an EPS Carry. The M&P came with a variety of plates and screws, although none for the 507k (EPS Carry) footprint. I ended up ordering this https://chpws.com/product/sw-m2-0-c-o-r-e-to-holosun-407k-507k/  which shouldn't be needed for the 5.7 but it comes with screws too, and CHPWS sells just the screws if needed. The EPS Carry also came with three different sets of screws all in different thread pitches.

Honestly I'm a bit confused by it all too but I'm sure some combination has to work

If not I'll just end up ordering some screws from somewhere.

Technically the M&P 5.7mm does not even have a threaded barrel.  The barrel has no threads and the threads are on what amounts to the gas tube.

I'm not a lawyer but wouldn't this fall into a grey area? The actual barrel (the portion with rifling) is inside a sleeve which is essentially a gas expansion chamber tube that is threaded.

Edited - beat, see post prior to this.

Sagillman, what screws did you use to mount the 507K. I have the 5.7 and a Holosun 507k and the screws are too short. I wasn't able to mounted. Did you buy aftermarket screws?

It was a newer EPS(same footprint as the 407/507k). I used the longer of the 2 sets.
