Dog1 if you don't mind me asking, how much was the stock barrel. I looked on brownells and only saw after market and stock ones for a .45 and they were like $165.00 to $250.00 . I know they are listed for like $80.00 direct from S&W. At least thats what the catalog said. I work third shift (12hrs) so Brownells is closed during my regular awake times.

Thanks, Mike

Try MidwayUSA.  They had the 9mm barrel in stock a few days ago.

Well, that sucks.  I just bought an M&P 9mm, and I can't use a 40 in it?  But if I'd bought the 40, I'd be all set to have 2 calibers?

I saw several postings saying the barrels won't swap the other way, but I either missed the "Why" or nobody has posted it.  Is it the extractor/breechface?

Thanks in advance.

Not only TWO calibers, but THREE!

.40 mags are interchangeable between .40S&W and 357Sig

So if you had gotten a M&P40 you could convert between all 3 service calibers.

Sorry to add kerosene to the fire...lol.

Do you have a link to the 9 mm barrel, compact version? I am looking to pick one up for my 40c soon.

Is the full size the 4.25 barrel or the 5 barrel. I am getting ready to order an M&P 40 and I want to make sure I get the right one to work with the 9mm barrel conversion.

You can get either the full size or the compact and it will work with the 9mm conversion.

Got a couple 9mm mags. Now to fit in a range session. Got a 9mm pistol for less than $100 in parts. Thanks to Dog1 for doing the homework!

Any idea where the brass is landing with the 40-9 barrel?  Any getting thrown at you, or all they all pretty consistently off to the side?

Has anyone tried this with a Storm Lake barrel?  I need a threaded 9mm barrel for my MP40 and would rather not pay the upcharge for the conversion barrel if the "stock replacement" 9mm will work in my 40.

I got my 9mm barrel from a fellow ARFCOMmer, and now I have a couple of 9mm magazines. Hopefully I'll be testing this rig out Saturday.

I also bought a G19 Gen 4 today, so I guess we're gonna have a shoot-off LOL.

I'll be sure and take some pics so I can post them up here.

Finally got around to going to the range with my 9mm barrel dropped into the M&P .40.  I made up 100 rounds from some range scrap and some Hornady 115gr XTP's...the only thing the local shop had in 9mm on that particular day.  I load for .40 and .45 ACP and use Bullseye...I quickly found out that Bullseye isn't the best/right powder to use on a 9mm with XTPs...as the charge at 5.0 is slightly compressed...I dropped down to 4.7gr and just loaded quickly.  There was a lot of muzzle jump...about twice what my .40 does...and the muzzle flash...in a well lit indoor range was huge...I wouldn't want to shoot it in the dark.

First off...I got to the range and shot 30 rounds of .45 ACP thru the M&P .45...and dead center every time...then 45 shots thru the .40 M&P and dead center everytime...at just 7 yards...heh...anyway...the 9mm drop in barrel gave me 3 inches left...but center vertically...over and over repeatedly.  I was using the .40 magazine and the flat nose of the XTPs would jam up going up the feed ramp about once every 25-30 shots...maybe too much of a gap between the feed lips and the ramp...I ran 100 rounds thru...I think I had 4 jams on the feed ramp.  I think with a purchase of a few 9mm magazines...and the use of a proper powder/bullet combination...it would be a good fit...but 9mm just isn't for me.  I'll stick with the .40 and .45...and if I ever need to just shoot some 9mm because it is readily available..then I have that option.  You never know what ammo you will have on Zombie Day.

WOW!

I got back from the range a couple hours ago, and I am freakin' IMPRESSED with how the 9mm barrel performed! It's night and day for me, between the .40 and 9mm.

75 rounds each of Federal Champion and PMC bronze FMJ. Zero malfunctions. Recoil was very modest, and rapid follow-up shots were quick and easy. My only complaint of the day was that the ejection was pretty weak––again, no malfunctions, but the brass wasn't thrown more than a foot or two. A few gently came back at me. Nothing to cry about, though.

Accuracy was steller, at least for my shooting ability. I did most of my shooting using a post for support at the 10-yd. line, as I wanted to get a feel for how accurate the gun was. I did find out the gun shoots high. (This was confirmed by another shooter.) Here are some pics I took:

(Standing, semi-supported, 10 yds., 15 rounds (6 o'clock hold; ignore the holes in the white––not mine):

Standing, isoceles, 10 yds., 15 rounds (sights were on the X):

For comparison, my best group of the day with my brand new G19 (to the left of POA as usual ):

I think those groups would have been a bit tighter, had I not struggled with the weak trigger reset. I'm seriously considering the RAM for this gun; the trigger pull is nice, but the reset sucks.

At the end of the day, the M&P is clean and back in the safe...guess which barrel it has?

A big thanks to Dog1 for starting this thread (and peaking my interest), and thanks to the ARFCommer who sold me the 9mm barrel for $40.

Have you tried Brownells? Or locally? I bought two from the local pawn shop...paid $33.95 + tax (Ouch!), but it got me in the game until I can buy a few more from 44Mag.com

Brownell's is out too. They are $41.99 for non-dealers and $33.46 for dealers.

I get the dealer discount and I pay less at 44mag.com or Greg Cote.

Thanks, buddy, for creating a mag shortage.

Just kidding. But damn! The dealer price is $33.46 at Brownell's? I guess maybe I'm not getting raped locally.

What about the EE? Anyone selling them?

I have not seen any for sale in the "EE's" of any site I belong too.

You can blame the Tucson shooter for the run on vendors.

Also I heard a snippet of a rumor that there was a problem with the manufacturing facility that makes them. Something about a broken part on a machine that kept the line down.

S&W was not going to ship any to dealers, to keep extra in house.

Like I said, it was a rumor.

Well, that sucks, but thanks for the info. I guess I'll find one more locally. At least then I'll have enough for a duty loadout. I originally hadn't planned on investing a whole lot of money in this little trial, but I fell in love yesterday.

I brought home my M&P40c today and I just ordered my Stormlake 9mm conversion barrel. I've been searching off and on for the past couple of weeks at brownells/midway ect.. with no luck of them having the compact barrel in stock - factory or stormlake.

I forgot I had an amazon promo code/gift card deal and voila, in stock!

I will post a range report once I get some mags.

Well, I've got bad news.

The storm lake .40 to 9mm stainless conversion barrel does not seem to work so far. The barrel drops in, but the slide will not cycle. The only naked eye visible difference between both barrels I see is that the feed ramp on the 9mm is definitely longer than the .40? I didn't bring my caliper home from work, but I will do some measurements tomorrow.

I will get a video of what's going on and post it to see if anyone has any suggestions.

I'm ALSO having a real hard time with my take down lever, as it will not stay in the down position 99% of the time. I'm really hoping this is just a "break in" quirk, because this is my first brand new purchase, and the handgun I'm going to be carrying...

Right now, no one has them in stock. There seems like there was a run on them....

This is on the ' must have ' list. I have a new glock on order, when that is paid off next will be a 9mm barrel I think

I wonder if smith will ever realize the potential here, throw together a package deal for an M&P40 with an extra barrel and mag. Not that they are having any problem selling the M&P but if I were on the fence about buying one the ability to change calibers right out of the box would help me decide.
