I would go with the P228.
For me no matter how hard I try it's difficult for me to shoot the P220 accurately.
P228  9MM
P220  45 acp

But it's really depends on the caliber you're looking for.  9mm is cheaper to shoot.

Best bet is if you get a chance to shoot both models then decide.

I say the P220. I've owned both but sold the P228 and will never sell the P220. Yes you can get short triggers for them. I installed one in mine and love it.

220s can be had in 9mm as well.  I've been debating purchasing one from a friend of mine.

Which one feels the most natural when you hold it? I like the 220 that I have, but my 228 feels great and is alot easier to shoot. It is very accurate and rides better for me when I carry concealed.

Without a doubt a P220 or P220ST....

The pistol is a tac driver right out of the box and is an awesome defensive weapon in 45acp.

(They did make some early version of the P220 that were used by the German Police and Japanese
Self Defense Forces.. in 9mm
It was single stack with a European or American mag release
