Someone took a picture of a new Glock that was already in the hands of LEOs with new features. When will this possibly be out for purchase to the general public?

If I am thinking of the same photo, it was an Indianapolis PD G17m, not a true gen 5, though a successor to the gen4 nonetheless. Not going to be sold to the public until gov/le contracts are filled first.

You guys are referring to this one.

It's not a Gen 5

The "M" series is not a new generation, but rather a contract specific version to meet procurement requirements for the FBI and at least one other large agency.  Glock confirmed at SHOT that a Gen 5 is not something that's in the works.  The current "M" variants have been retuned to Glock for repairs due to a slide lock issue.

This has been discussed at length several times.

This was not a return gun. I have had it for a couple of weeks. So far, I am loving it.

We transitioned to the regular 17.4 about the same time the original thread on the 17M (the one that turned into GD ) was posted.

I wish we had waited and got the 17M, as I really dig the idea of no finger grooves.  I can take them off my personal guns, but not something I'm issued

I agree about the finger grooves. With the RTF frame these are a little Easier to handle than the old Gen 1s. Plus, the back straps help. I'm kind of meh about the Ambi slide release. Based on what I have seen so far, I'll pick up a 19 as soon as they hit the market.

All my personal guns are Gen3, so I will probably pick up a pair of 17M/19M when they become available.

Even my Gen3 17 with finger groove removal, stippling, and frame reduction does not feel as "thin" in my hand as my issued Gen4.

I mentioned this is the 2017 New Glock Products thread, but apparently at least two Glock LE reps have stated that the M models will not be available for agency testing until Summer 2017, and commercial sales will not start until 2018 at the earliest, due to their production demands for the FBI contract.

I like the idea of no finger grooves - my fingers just don't quite line up with the G19 Gen 3 grooves, and the grip on my G17 Gen 2 feels much better. I'm curious why they appear to have gone back to the round notch at the front of the magwell. Not something I feel strongly about, but I don't really care for it on my G17 for some reason.

What is the magwell like?  Do you have a side by side comparison of a Gen3/4 vs M?

I think that the FBI magazines have bigger baseplates. I can only guess that it's for stripping mags. Incapacitation drills?

In other words, I have no idea.

How can they be making basically the same gun for the last 34+ years and still have issues?

I'm very interested in a 17M, hopefully they figure it out soon.

It's not the same gun...  The FBI requested several technical changes for the new pistol, which included a redesigned locking block (see photo)

I agree.  Was the locking block and RSA really an issue or do they just need to be different ?  And does the "M" stand for modified maybe and not Military as some have suggested ?

Have you had an M type 19/23 in your hands? I'm curious about the cutout on the smaller grips, that's going to be really annoying if present on the compact models.

If there is a 23, it's more super secret than the 19.

There is no cutout on the 19.

A couple guys on Lightfighter, including an LEO who talked to Glock at SHOT, are under the impression that Glock does not intend to release these models for civilian sales (for now, at least) and will only sell them to select agencies. One of them speculated that part of this may be because they were pressured into producing variants without finger grooves (as specified by the FBI), which are otherwise billed as an "improvement" on Gen 3 and later models. On one hand, it seems like they would want to sell anything that will make money, but on the other hand, I could see the dilemma of removing a feature that has been advertised as an important part of their design. This last part is speculation, of course, but the first part about restricted sales is apparently based on actual conversations with Glock reps. I hope this is not the case, because I definitely like the look of the 19.

Same here.  I'm itching to add a 19 to my stable for CCW and that 19M grip is so...YES!

Hopefully they will be available to us mere mortals soon.

My first GLOCK was a 17/4 - very early production.  Had issues for over a year of trying new parts from GLOCK until it ran right.  Now I trust my life with it and CCW it often.  Hopefully the M series - if released to non LE - will just run.

The "M" models, that is the 17M and 19M will become available to the public, "eventually". Originally, they predicted after Shot Show.

The FBI specification, in the section specifing dimensions, equaled the the 17/19 in size. They specified a 9mm. They specified no finger groves. They specified night sights available equal to Trijicon HD's or better. They specified it had to be available in three colors: non-reflective black, tan and green. They specified the mags had to interchange (i.e. the 17 fit 19); the mag well be flared for rapid mag change. They specified there be three sizes in frame (i.e. back straps).....They specified the triggers be 5-6 lb pull.

I don't remember reading anything about locking blocks. I do know they have flared the barrels on the sides. The new gen 4's are like that I noticed.

I recently got one of the gen 4 19C's and the sides of the barrel use to be squared, but, now are beveled on the corners.

I've not seen one in other than black yet either.

ADD: Also, I wonder if the triggers and the rest of the parts interchange with the the g4 17/19's???
