Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - just got a SAR1, what's the thing on the left side of the receiver?

I just got an SAR1 today and the info that came with it had good instructions for field stripping it to clean it but no other info. What's the thing on the left side? it almost looks like the grooves a dovetail sight base has. Is it some sort of mounting attachment?
also, any tips on getting the cleaning kit tools in and out of the stock without pinching the hell out of your fingers?

It is a plate for mounting optics.

thanks for the pic and info, that's what is on the gun
can't wait to get it to the range to see how it shoots compared to my bushmaster

They are a blast to shoot, but beyond 50 yards they aren't overly accurate.
