Here's a pic of my new Romanian WASR-10 that was modified to accept hi-caps by my dealer (he also refinishes the wood on all these):

Here is a picture of my bone-stock 2003 model SAR-1. I'll be adding a AK74-style muzzle brake to it sometime in the near future. The finish on the 2003 model seems to be somewhat beter than what I've read for earlier models. The wood stain on all the furniture seems even, and there was no noticeable trigger slap.
Other than the brake, I have no other upgrades planned. It's an AK, for crying out loud. It's *supposed* to look gnarly... |

Here's the update to my SAR-1 from a couple of posts ago with the muzzle brake installed.
I also rubbed out the wood by using 320/400 grit stearated sandpaper to take off the sheen and flatten the finish, followed by 0000 steel wool. Gives a nice finish similar to an "oil" finish. |

Zhukov,
Man that is one good looking AK, your stock work is really nice. I say you win the prize for best looking AK without spending a bunch of money. I have a SAR-2 (I like the little caliber, a lot) and replaced the stocks with K-Var synthetic (really it is plastic, go ahead and say it..) Functional and weight saving, but your SAR1 has a more down to earth look! Guess I need another AK now, might even go to the "big caliber" (7.62x39) |

Bill:
Thanks for your accolades. THe thing is, it was really easy to do - no more than an hour if I remember right. To be honest with you - when you look close, you can still see that the finish isn't perfectly flat everywhere. It would have taken some more sanding, but I just didn't feel like it. Instead, I just rubbed the low spots with the steel wool under my thumb to get rid of the gloss. One day, if I'm really bored, I may sand it some more, and spray on a little more finishto make it really smooth. But then it would not look as rugged as AK's need to look like. I'm happy with the -74 brake, as I've always liked the look of the AK74. But the cheap availability of 7.62x39 convinced me to stick with the "original". Now, I've got the best of both worlds, although I do wish the AWB would have sunsetted already; that way, I could have gotten a slant brake and swapped the two out as the mood strikes me.... |

A SAR1 and a WASR 10 in different configurations. Ive taken the folding stock off of the SAR 1 untill its legal and put the original wood stock back on. Also SAR 1 has a chinese type wood checkered pistol grip with metal collar.

Awesome pics! I just took the plunge and bought my first AK - a SAR-2 at gunbroker. You guys have given me some great ideas.
dot_bob, is that a H&K mag in your AR? I've heard they are the chit as far as AR mags go. I just don't think there were any available to regular joes like myself. |

Here's a SAR-3 (.223 cal) that I modified slightly.

SAR 1 762x39? I think that K-var sells the 74 type breaks. Except that they won't fit, unless the front sight base is installed. A cheaper option would be to install a threaded sleave and affix the entire arrangement permanently.
|
|
The front site base has to be changed for the 74 brake to fit. A threaded sleave may be a cheaper option.
