My cousin was nice enough to take and send me some photos of the stock I made for him last year.
After showing me his new rifle and stating that he didn't like the grip he wondered if there was any way to improve the feel of the thing, Having wanted to try something like this, I agreed to undertake the project. Here is the result. Constructed from Baltic Birch plywood, stained to match existing wood. Wood was shaped by carving and then by sanding. Many hours of sanding. It has a 13.5" lop, Straight line profile. Raised comb for use with scope. Rubber "sporting" butt-plate. AK grip angle. Asymmetrical design optimized for right handed use, it can take a grip screw for added strength.     My cousin says it feels like an entirely different rifle, he likes it.  |

The stain is "Magic"(brand) Light Mohogany, "Penetrating Oil Base Wood Stain" This is an old can I had on a shelf, no idea if this is still on the market. The shine comes from multiple applications of "Hopes" Tung Oil. 0000 grade steel wool between coats.

Very nice upgrade to the canoe paddle!
I know the std butt has a sprung buffer in the metal end cap, but a Pachmyer pad here will work just as well. Thanks for the pics! |

man that is absolutely beautiful. nice job, looks wonderful.
i've seen a few people carve their own stocks, what are they using to do it? when they say 'carving', do they mean by hand?

I use a jig saw to cut out the rough pattern, then the rest by hand with various knives, with all of the subtle shaping done with 60 or 80 grit sand paper. It is time consuming. |

I'm thinking of making the pattern available to people here, as I don't think I could make too many of these stocks for sale. Maybe a scale drawing, plus detailed pictures and instructions? |

Great Job.. Are you going to make him a matching front stock? For those of you who don't know what an original stock looks like less the packing grease. Nice work. Did you laminate 2 pieces of thinner ply together or did you find some bigger dimentioned Ply? The thickest I find is 3/4"
