Has anyone attempted to convert 5.56 mags to 5.45. I just bought the clear 5.56 mags from kvar. I know 5.45 mags are plenty but they don't make clear ones. Is it even possible? If not I guess I would have to get a sam5!

I use the 5.56x45 5 round mags from K-VAR in an Arsenal SLR-105 in 5.45x39 rifle. I wanted a mag that would be legal for shooting varmints. It needed sanding on the back just a bit to clear the mag catch. Holds 4 rounds of 5.45x39. I suppose it would be easy to get the 20 round mags to work also the same way but I think they may end up holding a couple shy of 20 rounds.

I have had excellent luck with 5.45 in 5.56 magazines. I use standard Ruger factory 20 round magazines in my 5.45x39 Mini 14 GB and they feed perfectly reliably. Its possible to fit 21/22 rounds of 5.56 in these magazines and I am able to get 20 rounds of 5.45x39 in them. To ensure proper fuction, I slightly beveled the front edge of the magazine to ensure proper feeding of the longer bullet. USGI magazines will also contain and feed 5.45 rounds, depending on the weapon.
AK's and thier magazines are usually much more robust and functional, so if I can't make it work with USGI and Mini 14 magazines it should be a cake walk with .223 AK magazines.
