just getting into shooting with my new p22 and i came across this question:


In theory which gun would make a larger hole in a target which it fired upon?

1. Browning M1919A4 .30 cal Machine Gun

2. Kalashnikov AK-47 7.62mm Assault Rifle

I read online you can get a 7.62mm barrel for the browning, but yet its not the same.
or is it ?

Theyre both 7.62

If you want to get really technical, the AK round is slightly bigger. The Russian "7.62 mm" actually is about .311" inches in diameter, whereas the 7.62 rounds of the West are .308 inches. It is very close, and the holes (assuming ball/fmj ammo on the target and no other odd factors) in the target would be almost identical, and only by close measuring with a caliper would you be able to tell.

I wonder if velocity would make a bigger hole. Hmm.
