Russian made film.

I bought the DVD for like $5 when I was in St.Petersburg.

Basically its a combination of Full Metal Jacket/Hamburger Hill but set in Soviet Afghanistan in 1988/89. Folllows a group of Soviet Paratroopers from Basic training all the way to combat.

Overall, its pretty good but if you are just after action, then it would be a disappointment. Other then the final battle, there is only about 10 minutes worth of combat.

The one I bought was only in Russian, but was still able to figure the basic story out.. Later, I had the wife translate some of the words, and understood a little more. Anyone that has served in the Military (any military) will be able to relate to everything, as its all pretty much the same.

Sure leather straps were used as well, but I think that is surgical tubing on the buttstocks..

Shots are from the DVD 9RotA, it's a russian warmovie on young troops in afganistan 1985. No subtitles, so understanding it is a bit hard(unless you speak russian).

Got the DVD at home, and I don't speak russian. But the movie is shot beautifully, all the stuff is authentic. Mi24's, Mi8, SU25's, AK's etc etc

I would guess the leather straps are for more comfort when aiming and firing.  My 74 kinda taps my cheek when I fire it, about the only draw back.

Combined with the fielddressing in the buttstock, surgical/silicon tubing would make perfect sense. The brown look of it had me convinced it was leather

Why do they have an Asian looking guy in there?

Probably a Siberian....The Soviet Union was big enough to have at least three racial types in it.

There are a lot of asiatic people in Russia and the former Soviet Union.  Some more so than others.  Take a look a Boris Yeltsin's or Svetlana Boginskaya's face and tell me you don't see some drops of asian blood in them...

Think the DVD is Region5, but if your player is chipped or otherwise region free that shouldn't be a problem

Thanks Kuiper!

I'll have to try to track it down.

As far as nationalities go.......

Tartars, Kazaks, Uzbeks, Turkmen, Turks, Finns, Slavs, Caucasians (Caucus Mountain region....Georgians, Chechens), Armenians, Azerbijani, Chinese, Mongol, Siberian steppe nomads, that and more all comprised the Soviet Union.

When you get it Tim you should have a showing in Richmond That'd be cool

I received this film as a gift from my brother-in-law (who lives in Moscow).  The case said "Russian/English Subtitles" so he thought it would be perfect for me.  It looks like a licensed copy but alas, it doesn't have English Subtitles.  So, I'll have to ask the wife to translate.  I heard it is a very good film from quite a few people - people who aren't even AK fans.

I have one of those Norcent DVD players so I can play the movie (the cheaper the DVD player, the more likely it will play PAL movies).  The region isn't a big deal, it's the PAL format.  You can rip-recode a DVD without regions with free tools available on the internet (and legally under your fair-use license).  Coding it from PAL to US Standard (NTSC) is the pain in the ass.  If you have a copy in PAL format and you want to convert it and strip the regions, go to www.videohelp.com.

Mine said the same thing on the cover- English subtitles... Of course it did not.

I simply play it on my laptop without problems.

You can find copies on Ebay for like 10 bucks.

Since they retail in Russia for like 4 or 5 bucks, thats about the max one should pay for one in the west.

Most of the Stan's were former Soviet countries and most of Uzbekistan is asian as a result of Ghangas Khan's quest into Central Asia.
