In about a month, I will be in the market for an AK. I have never owned one, and only ever shot one. My budget will be around $300-$450. What country/style would be good? Leave plenty of feedback. Thanks alot fellas!

My thoughts save up another 300 bucks than go buy an arsenal SAM7 while you still can.

OK, this saves me some time, I was going to ask just about the exact same question, except I have the cash now $500.00 and not a red cent more, Woot for Christmas money !

I just realized that we are both from Ohio, we are fortunate that we have several chooses right here, Fin feather and fur had some WSAR's so do Vances in Columbus and Hunters Den in Shelby. They had both regular stocks and ones with the plastic side folders , SOG has or had the century under folders.

Two places to research:

www.gunsnet.net/Linx310/index.shtml

Others will have suggestions as well.

The VEPR is the best production AK on the market and can be had for $550. Reciever Comparison

People choose the Country of origin of their AK in different ways, some just pick the AK they're attracted to.Are you partial to any particular Former Eastern Bloc Country?Look around the site a little, check the posts about the Century Yugo underfolders, the WASRs,Vector Arms,Arsenal.....................

I knew that was coming.

I would get either a vepr or a vector with the 5 year warranty, probably the best for the money imo.

Arsenals are nice to if your willing to spend a bit more.

check out atlantic firearms sight.

Let this site off the earlier post. It provides a good overview of many AK rifles.

Find a WASR-10 in person and see how you like it, and make sure the sights aren't canted.

And next week, when this same question is asked again, you'll know this answer is coming again.

Low quality usually equals low cost. I would hate for your first impression of an AK to come from a WASR.

In today's market that's what it usually means.

My advice:

Get one with the skeletonized furniture if possible. These things are heavy.

what do you think about the .223 WASR? And what does WASR stand for?

I've read alot of bad things about these rifles. My understanding is that there will almost certainly be some problems with the mag well and that you will have to cut/grind a large piece of metal out of the mag well in order for it to accecpt high cap mags and drums properly. You will also probably need to grind some burs out of the mag well.

The problem with these rifles is that the receivers are made to accecpt 10 round single stack magazines. Once they have been imported, Century Arms then expands the mag well by grinding metal from the receiver. This is compounded by the fact that Century Arms has very poor quality control.

I would probably steer clear of the the WASR's. Save up another coupld hundred bucks and get a good AK.

one man's opinion.

Seriously!

Here are the problems that WASRs have:

I have no idea. Sorry.

ETA - The advice to get a VEPR-K is good advice. They are only about $200 more than a WASR, you can get them in .223 (5.56 chamber), they aren't overly difficult to find (you'll see them on EE every so oftern) and they are without question the best AKs I have ever seen (I am by no means an AK expert though).

The correct answer to that question is "it is a piece of shit, which is why it is so cheap".

Remember, you get what you pay for. But any AK will be better than none.

Nothing wrong with my WASR shot 1000 rounds out of it with no problems. I had to do no modding to mine either......

You are a lucky man. Everyone knows that the WASR is the most consistantly problematic AK on the market.

Well now, I see one guy from Georgia who likes Vepr's has chimed in, now where is the other ? here are some of your options. mmk

www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=9

And the reasons we like VEPRs are..........1 They dont suck 2 they have the best feeling most ergonimical furniture there is. C They are the most accurate production AK out there 4. They dont suck 5 Thier sights arent canted 6 They are built on an RPK Reciever therefore being thicker and having a larger trunion. 7 Less recoil 8 Less expensive than the 2nd most accurate and highest quality AK out there, Arsenal. 9 They will outshoot any AK and most stock Ars. 10 They just look cool. Most Vepr owners love they way they look, I dont care about the traditional look as much as how tough and practical they are!

Link Posted: 12/30/2005 11:16:22 PM EDT
The VEPR is indeed a great quality rifle, but I am biased towards my Vector. Bare in mind that this is currently the only AK I own. There are many guys on this site that own/have owned numerous AK's. The Arsenals are great,Vectors and VEPR's, too. I wanted the traditional look for my first AK, hence the Vector (I couldn't afford an Arsenal.). I will brobably buy a VEPR eventually; but if I do, it will definitely be in .223 as this is the most inherently accurate cartridge design of the three offered.

I would recommend an Arsenal SAS M7 or a Vepr K in 7.62x39mm. But you are going to spend more than 300-400 dollars.

Everyone knows Im a VEPR fan, but I will admit the Vectors are great guns, and for the money one of the best traditional AKs available.

MY WASR HAS HAD 3000 ROUNDS THOUGH IT AND HAS OUTSHOT A VEPR AND SOME AMERICAN MADE WITH A BULGARIAN RECEIVER AND I HAVE HAD NO QUALITY PROBLEMS BUT A RATTLY MAG WELL BUT I AM 100 PERCENT SATISFIED WITH IT AND WOULD NEVER BUY A MORE EXPENSIVE ONE. The receiver is great also, the mag well looks like it was just made as a high cap.

Well, since I started this, I guess I will chime in with the fact that I have secured a deal with a guy for my first AK. I decided to go with the VEPR. After all the legal mumbo-jumbo is dealt with, and I recieve it, I will post the pics!
