Forgive the intrusion and asking the dreaded question. Have an option to purchase my first AK, it is a NORINCO, marked MAK-90 Sporter on the receiver, serial number 9302xxx. Big question is whether this is a pre or post ban rifle. Understand the "had to be assembled as such" clause, but was unable to find a list of serial # cutoffs like the one available for the ARs ...

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Simple answer: All MAK90s are postban.

The ban which covers foreign made weapons like the MAK is the '89 import ban. The 90 in MAK90 donates the year (1990) of the new designation.

It's a question that comes up a lot, as the '89 ban is not nearly as well known as the '94 AWB.

Also, what intrusion? Welcome!

I'd be willing to bet the serial number reads "93-XXXXX" which means it was imported in 1993, 4 years after the 89 ban.

Thanks all for the replies, indeed, I was not familiar with the 89 ban, as opposed to the better known 94 AWB. I found a link to a website with excellent information in the "Chinese" section of this board, and learned a lot last night. Once again, this forum comes through.

Alas, it being a post-ban does not work well, as the intent was to add a suppressor to the front for the JackHammer subsonic 7.62x39 ammo.

The search continues ...

Again, many thanks!

You can't go wrong with a chinese AK. I think I may be in the market for one next time I go to the funshow.
