I decided instead of buying an AK, I'd just build one. I built both of my ARs from scratch so I figured I can do this too. I have access to alot of tools and equipment, I think it should go smoothly.

Question is, where can I get a good milled reciever? I'm looking to build an AK with a fixed (ATF approved) folding stock.

Thanks

Also reputed to be very well made receivers. I have plans to acquire a milled '74 rec some day.

Besides the quality, the best part is that The Firing Line's receivers count as two US parts.

that much for a stripped reciver, almost better off to buy a sam-7, unless you wanna do it yourself cause you got nuthin better to do???

Wow, thats alot of cash for a reciever. I guess sometimes you dont have a choice in the matter. How hard is it to thread in a barrel? can I do it at home?

I agree, sam-7's are really sweet. I own one and I'm VERY impressed.

Yeah, those Firing Line receivers are very nice, but pricey. Since Arsenal Inc does not sell their SA M-7 receivers as stand alone components, the Firing Line would be the only company you can get a stand alone milled receiver from.

It's true about the SA M-7 being a good price for what one gets. Arsenal Inc uses a milled from forgings receiver (as done by Arsenal of Bulgaria), instead of a milled from barstock receiver (as done by the Firing Line).

With all else being equal, the milled from forgings method will produce a better overall product. The problem is the expense that the forging dies and foundry contracting brings when that method is used.

Here is what Queen City Forging has to say when comparing the milled from forgings method to the milled from barstock method:

"Machined bar and plate may be more susceptible to fatigue and stress corrosion because machining cuts material grain pattern. In most cases, forging yields a grain structure oriented to the part shape, resulting in optimum strength, ductility and resistance to impact and fatigue."

As one can see, when everything is equal, the milling from forgings is the better way to go when going with milled, but the process can cost more because of the tooling (forging dies) and outside foundry costs.

Since you would be using a parts set and the gas block hole is already drilled, it can be difficult to get the barrel to line up. They usually have to shave some of the barrel to get it to line up right. Call TFL and talk to mike about it or go to the TFL board at K-VAR where the subject has been covered.

It still only counts as one part. Since milled AKs have one less part than a stamped one, you need on less US part. But I get your drift.

Right, I sometimes tend to make things clear as mud. There is one less foreign part, the trunion. Addition by subtraction.
