Recently had a front end conversion (GBC13 + RRD4C & pin/weld) on a MAK 90.  As a result of removing the factory chinese gas block, I also lost the original forward sling attachment point on the rifle (chinese variants do not have a sling loops on the HG retainer).  The gun currently has an ultimak M2B and a KVAR lower handguard up front (which I prefer over a full rail or a magpul handguard).  I know I could easily go with a 1 point option, but I'd prefer a more comfortable 2-point setup.

Looking for sling ideas and mounting options that would work with the furniture I have.  Anyone ever modify a KVAR/arsenal handguard to have a QD swivel or has anyone ever mounted a sling via the cleaning rod hole of the handguard retainer?

Feel free to post your sling setups in general, even if they don't apply to my particular situation (perhaps they can inspire someone else).

Honestly I'd probably say one of the Blue Force Gear loop offerings just ran through the front sight post, or around the barrel between the post and handguard. Seems like the easiest way to me.

I figured gas block was going to be the most stable way to go.

You could go ghetto and pop rivet an M Lok QD plate to the handguard...

bubba is my middle name .  Honestly, I would like to see if anyone has installed QD sockets/plates to a KVAR handguard. I've seen it done with wood handguards and stocks.

Why don't you just get a picatinny sling mount? You got that rail up there...use it.

I have that top Magpul mount on a few ARs - works great with a paraclip-type setup on the front of your sling and pretty cheap.  MidwayUSA regularly has Magpul stuff on sale.

Edit to ask:  Where's your flashlight going to go?  A short pic rail with drilled holes in the plastic handguard and bolts/nuts is what I would do for a flashlight mount, but not a sling.  I'd be afraid the kind of stress I could put on a sling point may pop the bubba'd plastic holes in the handguard.  But a flashlight mount isn't a deal-breaker if it somehow pops off/breaks.

I will probably toss an offset light mounted to the ultimak, i will not however run a sling mount from an ultimak setup.  They are study enough to maintain zero and support optics/lights, but I am not confident in its ability to hold zero if I was yanking on a sling attached to it.

I put a QD socket in my Magpul handguard. I'm a lefty and couldn't stand using the stock ring.
So if you have the barrel clearance behind those handguards, you might want to try it.

I cut the sling loop and welded a qd cup on the retainer plate for the hand guard, works like a charm it killed the resale value I am sure but lucky for me I don't sell aks

Got any pics of the qd socket without the sling attached by chance?

I think the Magpul rail mount on the ultimak would be easiest.  I put one of these on the left rear side of an AK stock but you would have to trim the raised plastic fins on the AK handguard to get the Noveske to fit flush.  David

Well it a little late now but you could have had a machinist make a small sleeve to go behind that GB that would have acted as a stop for the original chinese sling loop attachment point. Added benefit would have been the sling loop would have been fre to rotate around the barrel axis for ambidextrous use. Or take some 1/8 in. rod stock and bend it into the shape of a sling attachment loop and have it TIG/MIG welded to the GB on one side or both sides and refinish the GB.

That's what I did with an Ultimak foregrip that covered the original sling mount. I went with a cheaper sling mount though. I wasn't going to pay $25 for a mount that cost $3 to make. Found one online for around $8-$10 that works fine.

So you're confident in its ability to maintain zero under recoil but not due to a sling? Doesn't make any sense. It's a good mount...use it.

Snagged a Haley Strategic Sling around black friday, ended up making my own wire sling loop for the front gas black.

Followed the little blog post/article by Recoil using some 1/16" coated steel cable, ferrules, and some heat shrink tubing.  Not a fan of the green color, but it works and is a hell of alot cheaper than a $35+ blue force gear loop.  One of these costs about $1.25 to make....

Easy enough fix. Can you do a pull up from it though?

I don't think the cable will budge out from those ferrules without excessive force.  I ended up putting a slightly longer sling loop on last night (made from an 11.5" loop instead of the 8" from the photos above) which was definitely a better choice for the gas block.  The recoil article suggested 8" of wire, but when you take into account the location they were using it (handguard sling retainer loop) vs looping around the actual GB, the extra length of 2-3+ inches is needed.
