I got some FMJ 7.62x39mm ammo at the gun show. It has a green laquer case, with no bullet sealant, and blueish-purple or no primer sealant. There are two types:

-6 oclock stamp is "05", 12 oclock stamp is "65" or "66".

-6 oclock stamp is "04", 12 oclock stamp is "64". The font is smaller and less deep on this headstamp.

What country made this? Is it steel core? Thanks in advance,
Q-gunner2

Saw you were from VA...Did you buy this stuff at the showplace in Richmond this weekend?  In the 15 round boxes for like $4 a box?  If so the guy selling it told me it was Bosnian Surplus.

Just got the common sense to check the Cartridge Collector's page, it shows "05" as an E. German factory. But no listing for "04"...

Is the E. German steel core?

PS- anr6t, I remember the booth that had it, if he has some next show I will grab it and save some for you.

This is definitely East German ammo, probably steel core if in original packs.  Hope this helps...Tommy.

I know that its corrosive... just hoping its steel core. How does it compare with Norinco steel core?

Click the link for the "AK rifle ammo id" page of my web pages for info on this ammo. Scroll down to the East German ammo section.

Is there any way to tell if my ammo has lead core or steel core without pulling a bullet?

04 loose packed is steel core

No you will have to pull a bullet as the only way to tell if it is lead core is by the box.

OK... there might be a difference.

Anyone who has lead core and steel core German ammo, look at the bullet tip. My ammunition kinda has a nipple tip, it isn't standard FMJ style.

Why not sacrafice one lousy round? Use a magnet to test the bullet.

Magnets do not work, steel jacket does not mean steel core.

That's true, but if you pull a slug and cut it in half, all the shavings will go to the magnet whereas the lead shavings will just sit there and mock you.

All 7.62x39mm ammo produced in East Germany/Germany has a copper plated steel bullet jacket. So a magnet will be attracted the the steel jacket  not the steel core.
Once a bullet is pulled it is real easy to tell if it is a lead or steel core bullet. Notice how the lead core bullet on the left is shorter than the steel core bullet on the right. Also the steel core bullet has a boat tail and the lead core has a flat base.

Dang it...

Yeah I know, stupid guy who will bug everyone to death before sacraficing a bullet. Really, I have only 90 rounds and this stuff is hard to find, so it would suck to waste a good round. What is the gr. weight of the Steel Core bullets? 123 like the lead core or is it heavier or lighter?
