I dont myself, a friend of mine only uses motor oil on his rifles. He has for years with good results. Im not sure what weight/viscosity.

A lot of people use motor oil since it is inexpensive and it works well enough in the boundary layer category but performs poorly in the other desirable areas such as resistance to corrosion and oxidation and it contains toxic substances.

ATF (not that ATF, Automatic Transmission Fluid) is actually better than motor oil but toxic as well.

+100, FAR better than motor oil, this is what I use on all my rifles.

I use synthetic 20W-50 on all of my guns. Works great.

A bunch of the AKs I confiscated in Iraq smelled of used motor oil (and body odor).

I've been using MOBIL 1 5w30 synthetic for about 15 years

It works better than CLP and is cheaper

I shoot a lot, and it seemed like a waste of money buying the big bottles of CLP....even at wholesale/dealer prices

.

For those of you using ATF, are you using 100% AFT or mixing with something else?  If I recall ATF has an unpleasant smell.

Another vote for Mobil 1 5W30.....for all my lubing needs.....never a problem, and cleans up easy....

Yup, that works and so does some wheel bearing grease.

I use grease in summer and Motor oil in winter on my AKs.

I don't know if the AK is any different than any other rifle, but I've been using Mobil 1 or Royal Purple fully synth 5w30 motor oil on ALL my guns for like 2 + decades. Works like a charm

My Romanian Guard kits were loaded with grease when I first got them.  PITA to clean off but they really dont need that much cleaning with regular use.

High temp grease in my gun cleaning kit for when I strip and clean.

My SHTF kit has a little squeeze bottle of motor oil in it that I can squirt into the action to douche out grit and debris in a pinch, plus it's a good lube anyway.

I've used motor oil before but I dislike that after starting to use LUCAS white lithium grease from home depot. I've started to use it on everything. AR barrel nuts for antiseize and populating AK barrels. Just a light coating on the wear points of the bcg and cycle the action to get everything greased evenly before shooting.

1 tube of white lithium will last you years.

i've always used grease on my AK's but since i got tired of cleaning that crap out with the suppressor use, i'm gonna try mobil1.

i use it on my AR's with great success and its easy to clean.

Why not use a grease with an appropriate temperature range? I've used grease to -18F.

I dont have an AK at the moment( But hopefully will fix that soon), but I use a combo of MOBIL 1 5w30 synthetic mixed with just enough ATF mixed in to make it red. When i need to use grease, i use some Lucas Red and tacky. Tube cost less then $5 and will last the guns i have most of my life. So for about $20, i have enough lube for all my guns for life no matter the situation.

Did i mention i am a cheap bastard?
