I am in the process of refinishing my Romanian furniture, and I am using Rit dye and Deft gloss clear spray. I have the wood dyed, and the first light coat of the Deft gloss is on the wood. My question is this: should I let the clear coat dry (an hour or two between coats) and then buff it out with 0000 steel wool before putting each new coat on? Or just put the new coats on every 30 minutes or so?

I'm planning to do three coats, and this first one has a few small imperfections which I would think would be removed by buffing with steel wool.

Let the clear coat dry for a day or two, then buff with 0000 steel wool. Never apply a fresh coat without buffing you will trap all that dust and imperfections into the finish. Make sure to let the clearcoat cure good before you buff and make sure to use a tack cloth just prior to recoating. Good luck , Hope this helps.

How important is it to use a tack cloth? Can I use a damp towel to do the same thing?

yes .. tack cloths are not super important .. just make sure you have it real clean ... no dust left over .. tack cloths are a luxurie .. ( spelling ) .. i dont know alot of guys who run out to the store to buy a tack cloth during wood finishing .. clean is clean . no matter how you get it done .. tack cloths are just sticky cheese cloth .. which make the cleaning easier ..

Thanks for the call Eric. I have just been using a damp rag followed by a dry rag and no problems. I'm about to buff the furniture out and spray the final coat. It is looking good!
