I think the "flats" sold by Joeken and FAC were made by Hexxe, who has a poor reputation (and I've seen reports on gunsmithing lists of damaged receivers).

Seems like some people are having some success with bending jigs.

If you're thinking about encouraging me to forget it and buy a nice receiver or wait for Global, restrain your fingers...I am. But the challenge of this project intrigues me.

What sort of steel are the flats made of?  I suppose one could engrave, bend, and send the thing off to be heat-treated?

well, from the standpoint of "no one really knows what alloy is used in the flats and no one is talking"...

you can go the same route as denny and buy 2 flats. send one off to a lab for analysis (i think denny said this was about $100 for the lab he used.

once the composition/alloy of the steel is known it can be treated with a process applicable to that particular alloy.
