Is it possible to scar or mess up the rifling in a rifle with an aluminium tip off a cleaning rod if it was tight going through the barrel

The rod won't do any damage, but the metal imbedded IN the rod will.
Too tight a rod is asking for trouble, even with a chrome bore. When you jam that rod in the bore, you will probably ruin your bore trying to get the rod out. Spend the money for the proper rod for your bore.
I like the Dewey rods. Other guys here will have other suggestions.
Kind of like "oil is cheaper than engines",a good rod is not going to be cheap, but still way less money than a new barrel.
Inmyarrogentopinion, we do more damage to our weapons cleaning them than shooting them. Mike

If you love you're bore, then consider a Dewey coated rod.

One part to keep an eye on is the connection of the rod to the jag, brush, or patch holder.  If that's not screwed down tight, it makes a great abrupt edge for screwing up you're muzzle crown.

The tip can also cause damage if it's too tight.
For what tips cost, there's no reason to use something that isn't perfect.

Order good tips from Brownell's or Midway.
