Can I swap out the bolt carrier in my 16" upper with another one from my 20" upper as long as I keep the same bolt that came with my 16" upper in it?

In other words, can bolt carriers be swapped to diagnose failures as long as the original, properly headspaced, bolt stays with the barrel?

I swapped my 20" upper bolt carrier into my new 16" upper with the bolt that came with the 16" upper to troubleshoot an issue.

Is ok??
