What grease do you guys recommend?
would Slip 2000 EWG work? |
I use the same purple moly grease that I use on my truck bearings, picked up a 1lb can a couple of years ago and have built a shit load of guns with it.

Cheap lithium moly from Walmart. Used on a shit load of guns and still have about 3/4 left.

Navee Seel Luv Greeze.
All of the above answers are gtg. EWG is gtg. I like the stuff. |

Aeroshell 33ms. I once decided to just buy a tub of it, maybe 4oz? When it came, it had a crack on the bottom of the container. It wasn't leaking, but it was definitely cracked clean through. I contacted the seller, and they sent me another one for free. I now have enough Aeroshell for 4 lifetimes. I put it on everything now! lol
As stated above, most any other lube will work just fine. |
I can't find shit for grease locally and don't want to order. Was considering using my Hopes 9 black grease... Use it on my fishing reels but wasn't sure on the barrel nut.
You are supposed to put grease on which part of the barrel with a new upper?
I use nickel anti-seize. It works great to ensure that your barrel will come off if necessary. I also use it on the breachplug on my Savage ML-II muzzleloader. The stuff works great.

Quoted: None have any high temp grease let alone a Molly grease. Rather use the 540 degree stuff I have than the 300 degree stuff they have. View Quote I can tell you all of the places Tig posted in his message have so called "high temp" grease, anything that is recommended for bearings is a high temp grease, every single store in the world that has axle bearing grease sells so called high temp grease! Hell I can buy a small tube of axle bearing grease at Albertson's and for that matter you can use motor oil if that is all you have! Christ! |

View Quote The grease is a lubricant for torquing, a quality wheel bearing grease is not going to break down due to extreme temp on your barrel nut. To each their own. |

Yup, overthinking things here.
When I was in the Army, we used GAA; Grease, Automotive and Artillery (always made by cheapest manufacturer). |
Same as the barrel nut
Aeroshell 33ms You are not supposed to use anything with graphite in it due to possible galvanic corrosion between the steel and aluminum. Most automotive moly/wheel bearing grease also has graphite... With that said, I have never seen and upper fail cause if that. Most people do not swim with their ARs in salt water, if you plan on it, it is something to keep in mind. |
Done lots of swimming in salt water. Biggest part is rinising it with fresh water ASAP afterwards then detailed cleaning when time permits.

I have some of this laying around. Would it do the job?

Go to the local auto parts store or Walmart a tub of EP Moly grease.

Umbrella Corp has their AeroShell 33MS Grease in stock. 2 size containers.
1.4oz for $8 & 0.5oz for $3.50 |

33ms. I bought it in small containers. I’ve done a dozen rifles (not all mine) with just a portion of the first one.
Off topic - it has a pleasant smell to me. So does CLP. Makes it easier to stick with both of them. |

I've got some Umbrella Corp AeroShell 33 and Mobile 28 grease. Both from what I understand make for excellent grease on receiver extension threads, barrel threads, barrel flange, triggers, and even some pins.
+1 to Umbrella Corp though. Solid and cool looking packaging. |

You don't need high temp grease as a requirement, hell a tube of common axle grease works fine, so of you guys take this way beyond what it needs to go...all you are doing is evening out the torque and making it easier to get it off if you need to, it is not some special elixir for magicians... If you're not in the business of assembling uppers for sale or you're not your group's gun-guy (that builds all his buddies rifles)... then you're just throwing money away buying a 14oz tube of the stuff. Someday when you die your relatives will be throwing away 90% full tubes of 14oz Aeroshell 33... but hey, the price-per-ounce was unbeatable! Personally, I use white lithium grease. it's good for bunches of things around the house and can be cheap at any auto store. |
