Hi all, looking for something different on a 450BM build. Wondering if there is another type of nut out there rather than the standard castle nut for the buffer tube. So far I can't find anything in my searching. I had guessed by now someone would have come up with a "better looking" retention system. Standard castle nut is fine but just looking for something different. Thanks

Are you looking for something with an entirely different method of securing the receiver extension or just a cosmetically interesting castle nut/end plate? I can't really thing of anything that would fit in the former category. If you just want a cool looking castle nut check out Strike Industries. PWS makes a ratcheting castle nut/end plate system that is very interesting but cosmetically it looks a lot like a standard one.

Just cosmetic difference. I thought I had seen one before that had flats then almost a cone down to the tube. Looked sharp as it was coated a color. Just can't remember where I saw it.

I have a couple folding stock adapters that came with their own castle nuts. The nuts are like a standard nut but not as wide, about half as wide. I ended up using two of them together on one AR buffer tube rather than just using them separatly. With the two together it ends up looking like a regular castle nut in width except there is no need to stake the nuts because the tension between the two nuts locks them in place.
I think the concept of two slimmer castle nuts locked together is a great idea, certainly an improvement over one nut that can come loose or needs staking. I would like to see a two nut system replace the single nut that needs staked.

The original carbines had a smooth nut w/ a single blind hole in it to tighten and loosen.  Folks in the Retro forum can tell you where to find them.

There are a couple of guys that regularly sell them in the EE section, but they are expensive for what they are and they take a proprietary type spanner wrench to tighten down properly.

Those wrenches are $7.  I have like 87 of them.  The tail on the standard AR armorer's wrench will tighten them.

I have a complete set of several spanners, but they are for my mill, lathe and the work I do on Hydraulic cylinders, so I have one to fit the carbine castle nut, but not a lot of people have those

PWS has a ratchet system nut. I know nothing about either.

And fwiw, I recall seeing something along the lines of what you describe. No idea where tho.

That looks like it will inevitably cut your face or hands with real use.

I suspect that with a 450 BM, he won't be using the standard "charging handle to the lip" cheek weld.

Thanks for the replies. Yea this is more for looks and I have a habit of finding any sharp edge on a rifle. This is a deer gun. I am looking for a little wow factor when I break it out at deer camp. The one I said I saw was so clean and smooth it just melted in with the rifle.

I could swear I've seen what you're talking about - it was a tapered nut with a pretty smooth finish - but I can't find anything like it anywhere. Maybe it was a proprietary stock setup or someone's fancy one-off thing.

Maybe something like this would work? Kinda pricy if you ask me, but looks cool. http://www.tacticallink.com/Z-360-Sling-Mount-GEN-2.html
