Do I just knock out the rollpin? Or is there a trick to it? Will the roll pin come out damaged or will it be reusable?

Also what size punch do I need?

Thanks

ETA: The reason I ask is I am going to check headspace on a couple of bolts.

Yeah, just drive the roll pin out. Be sure to hold the ejector though, as it is under spring tension.

As for the punch size, I can't remember off the top of my head, but I believe a 1/16" pin punch will do the trick.

Do I need to push in the ejector until it is flat with the bolt face?

There's a notch in the ejector that keeps it from moving in or out too far. Pushing it into the bolt slightly might take a little pressure off the roll pin.

Hold your thumb over the face of the bolt so it doesnt shoot out once the roll pin drops.

A little pressue on the ejector while tapping it out will help.

Use pipe clearners with some kroil and run it through all openings and such.
This will get it nice and clean, then use some good keltech sythetic oil.

Your bolt will thank you for it with smooooooth operations !!

My 2 cents

How do you hold it with your thumb while you are holding the punch to the roll pin and hammering?

Thats where the special tools come in but I can hold the plunger in with my thumb pushed in ever so slightly to releave the pressue off of the roll pin, slide the punch between my forefinger and thumb and tap it with the hammer in my right hand.

Of course a friend helping maybe easier for some, that is the way I do it when by myself.

Yeah, if you want to be fancy, they do make an AR-15/M16 Bolt Ejector Tool.
