Hmmm I have about 3500 wrapped up in my one Ar-15 I do have some extra parts though
I can't say the wife is close by.
None of yer beeswax!
I never even add it up. Too afraid to see what I spent.
My brother is always looking for a good deal on a complete upper. He's so happy when he can buy one cheap. That's him and that's fine by me.
I don't want to buy a complete upper because I know I'll take it apart or be unhappy with it. When I visualize a build I know what I want from the ground up. I watch the price on parts so I don't get screwed but I put it together the way I want. In the end I'm happy because I know exactly what's in the gun.

Also extra parts for my next build are not included such as CMT upper, CMT std BCG, LMT std BCG, Colt semi auto BCG, Jiga Crane SPR gas block, YHM flip up BUIS FSB, A2 "F" FSB, Phantom 5C1, 5C2, RRA CH, CMT CH, Badger Ordinance gen 1 tac latch, Stag Arms LPK, Samson MRFS-M and Samson MRFS-R rails.
My two carbines are built from parts from the great sellers of the Equipment Exchange of this site.
There will be a next build for sure this year, either a 18" SPR or a 20" DMR Stag Arms/ CMT rifle or maybe even both.
My first build is a pretty basic A2 uppered 20" HBAR, total cost including accessories (Bushnell 3-9x40mm scope, carry handle scope mount and Uncle Mike's sling) $660. The rifle itself was a kit from M&A $465 including shipping, and a stripped lower from a LGS for $100 including sales tax.
My 2nd build is significantly more expensive... I'm building an 80% lower... leaning towards a J&T 16" CAR kit, but haven't ordered it yet... But to build the lower I bought a CNC jig, a drill/tap set, a 13" 1.5HP drill press, an airbrush compressor, some Norrell's Moly-Resin, a respirator, heavy duty latex gloves, etc... Probably spent more on tools and stuff than anything else...
I built a SPRish rifle, with a WOA barrel, Colt upper and lower, Colt BCG, YHM freefloat tube, PRI FSB and ASA mad rear sight, with a Tasco Super Sniper in ARMS 22H rings for $850.
I waited and waited for parts on the EE to come up for sale and got lucky...
I just built a XM177 clone for $525. My son's rifle cost just a tick under $500.
All and all, this year has been good shopping the EE...well that and my Brownell's discount...
I can't recall who I bought the lower from. It was around the price Impact Guns has it for and was the most competitive at an Indy 1500 G&K show I was at in 2004. The rest of the parts were purchased from Model 1 sales except the buffer, spring, tube, buttstock and grip which I bought from a friend.
Lower parts set
Standard recoil spring, buffer, tube
2.00, 10.00, 12.00
chrome bolt and bolt carrier marked NM and charging handle
A2 stock and pistol grip.
Simmons scope (Ya Ya but it was 80.00 list)
And I still need to get a bipod. It's pig heavy on the front. Shoots like the slab of metal it is but I would not want to lug this pig around. It's strictly a paper killer or a stationary varmint gun. I love the Shaw barrel, the crown is unique and it dissipates a LOT of heat.
603.00 after all was said and done.
$900 or so.
Im in CT so I had to buy a Pre-1994 receiver...
My first...$1,400 for the rifle itself, then $200 in mags, $300 in ammunition, and $150 in the Surefire. I still need to drop $400 in optics. DOes it ever end?
I just built a SP1 type rifle for $377 complete. I was lucky got every thing off the EE boards except the lower reciver and that came from RB Precision
I am still building mine:
Doublestar Stripped Lower: $130
Armalite LPK: $65
Ace Skeleton Stock with buffer tube, spring, etc: $125
For a total of $320 wrapped up in my Lower Build.

Truth be told, I prefer shooting with this lower and my Bushmaster 16" upper, than the original Bushmaster lower with a telestock.
When POF gets back to me with the price for configuration I requested, I will have a total build price for you. It will still be several hundred dollars less than a DSA rifle with the POF upper.
Isn't it so much nicer being able to build what you want, and do it cheaply? I think too much of this board is stuck on paying top dollar and not knowing why.
My first build cost me right at 1K (with tools). I didn't want it to get to be so much, but don't regret it. I would have made sacrifices and still paid that much if I woulda bought it from the factory. The important part I built something I WANT and LIKE instead of "another gun that goes bang." And I got a few flavors of the week too.
CMT Upper (m4 feedramps)
YHM FF LW HG
CMT Mil-spec 6 pos stock
Denny's "Operator" Midlength
ARMS #40 BUIS (had laying around)
Magpul rail covers
Stag lower -$90
LPK - $44
Car stock - $30
B/BC/CH - $75
A1 1/12 Upper - $85
I had the upper in my closet from my 1st AR. I upgraded my first AR and let the upper sit in the closet for several years. I finally decided to send the barrel to KKF to be cut, threaded, and have a 5.5" flash hider attached. Most of the small parts came off of other builds and were left over.
My LPK and stock will be here this week and I'll post a picture later.
I totally agree...I will never pay for a factory rifle again...I built 4 this year, a SP1, CAR-15, an M4 for my son and a SPRish rifel and I would say that I have in all 4 guns, less than $1800.
A person could build one cheaper if they looked hard and waited for the deals to fall in their laps. I was lucky i found a guy that had a Colt SP1 barrel for $72 complete with hand guards and everything.
Colt A1 slick side upper $75 used
Superior lower blemm $75 new
Colt pencile Barrel $72 used
A1 stock and p-grip $55 used
Bushmaster bolt/carrier, CH $100 used , looks new
You, sir - ROCK.
Great rifle. Old School!
I decided to go with my M261 ($75) instead and make it my dedicated 22LR rifle.
This is great info. I knew it could be done for less. I was wanting to part it out anyway. So, I could spread the cost out over time. I'm in no hurry. I can wait for those deals to come along.
Lower by Spyder Tactical, $110 @ gunshow.
