I am looking to build a carbine but I want something very short, very light, and not too expensive.  I'd rather buy a lower and an upper.  I won't be building this from scratch.  I like the short model skeleton lower.  Where can I get one for cheap?  Any suggestions on an upper that would fit my needs?

I wanted something light and fast to move with so I just purchased a lightweight 16" complete  upper from M&A Parts. Barrel is about .560 diameter, supposed to be about 1/2 lb. lighter than a standard 16".

I've got a Model 1 lightweight kit rolling in tomorrow...I'm just trying to figure out what lower to use.  

82_Airborne, sound like you're talking about the Ace shorty stock...but I don't think you can get the "cheap" hehehe.  Only place I know that sells 'em is Ace Ltd.

This upper is about as light as you could get it...I don't have a scale I can weigh it on, but it's supposed to be around 3lbs.  I figure the rifle is a smidge over 5lbs, depending on what a finished lower weighs.  This kit would certainly fit your needs...just get the ACE shorty stock and you're ready to rock and roll.  The kit was $425, but they soak you an extra $25 just to get green furniture.  You could build the rifle you want for around $650...that stock is $125, so it adds significantly to the overall price of the rifle.

I went with Bushmaster on both my favorite rifles.

I bought the "new" ultralight barrel kit they're selling and complete upper and put them together myself saving assembly bucks.

For my lower I used an Olympic Arms pre-ban with a colaspable stock and a slightly heavy 14.5" M-4 barrel on my CQB my flat top upper. I went with the M-4 so I could mount a bayonett.

For my other light rifle I used a longer 20" A2 upper with a compact ACOG for the optics. Both are as light as possible without going silly - reducing the number of military parts to save an ounce or two.
