Is the Surefire m952v (150l) enough white light for hunting applications?

eTA: what would be the max effective yardage you could identify a coyote at?

Without NOD maybe 100 yards. They don't throw very far. A head upgrade will be better.

You can try and find a 350 lumen head, but from what I've seen it cost as much as buying M952V with a 350 lumen head to start with. All of the TIR heads on the M952V/M622V series lights wether is be a 150 or 350 lumen head has a good combination of throw and spill. Depending on your engagement distances and lighting conditions a V series light may or may not be a good choice for you. Do you have night vision? If so a better choice maybe a DBAL D2 which has an IR illuminator that can throw out past 500 yards easily and a IR laser that can reach 250 yards. You can always use the V series SureFire as a 10-100 yard white light/IR illuminator and the D2 for everything beyond. If your looking for a white light only 500+ lumens would be a better bet. I've yet to hear someone complain about having too much light for distance shots.

Your right I haven't thought about it like that.  I don't have nods right now but they are next on my list as are a few dbal's. So really I won't even need a light that has ir. Thanks for your input.

ETA: if I can find a 350l 952v(not sure where to find) that would be great but if not I'm going to go with something else.

The M952V has been discontinued by SureFire and placed by the M622V which is 350L

OP look hard at what you need dbals are $1000+ when you have the ir illumn on them.  I bought my nods in 2007 I am not rich .Here is my set up.

3 years of weekly night operations  or training in the army, plus 1 year of cobat ops in Iraq  plus 10 years of watching the civilian market make ir & NVD more available. led me to this answer - I have the price of one dbal D2 in the optic$400 tlr-2 IR, $600 & the surefire 300$150.

the ir laser is visible to 700 meters the ir led is usable to about 200 meters  my night vision is gen 2 + weather is a huge factor in IR performace.

the remote tail switches offered by stream light will work with Dbal plugs.  there is also one with an off option.

this is a surefire x300 on a 45 degree mount, and a stream light tlr-2 eye safe all IR = ir led illumination & IR class 1laser on a 90 degree mount

the setup is very narrow &clean using  the surefire dual switch to turn on either light. both lights have a off switch to prevent ADs

I would avoid the 952V. It's big, low output and obsolete. Go 600V (or 620V/622V). White light output is 350 lumen with a nice beam. IR illum is pretty much the same with the exception of some IR beam profiles have better throw for more distance vs. more spill.

I actually use a Vampire V1 weapons mounted in a Larue mount. A little less IR ilum but its perfect for most of my deep woods hunting that requires lots of navigation through trails. Out in the open, nothing will really seem enough unless you get the DBAL D2 or an actual restricted full power PEQ. I can ID coyotes to about 150 (NV), especially if they are looking at me (eyes glowing). But it all depends on fog/mist etc.

But unless you have NV, get an M600U or maybe the newer WMLX Gen2 with 800 lumen.

I compared my Streamlight TLR-1 IR (not to be confused with the TLR-VIR), M952V 350 lumen and my M622V 350 lumen light. The StreamLight actually had a brighter hot spot and threw @ 20 yards more in an urban environment with plenty of light pollution around.

Comparing the M952V vs the M622V both the white light and IR light where exactly the same in throw and spill.

If you're looking for something with onboard IR illuminator IR laser the DBAL 9007 is hard to beat for used @ 450.00 @ 679.00 new. It has a throw of @ 100 yards which will improve with low-near dark conditions. Compared to a M952V/M622V the IR light is good for @ 120 yards. IMHO for defence, hunting, duty I would highly recommend have a separate white light ready to be deployed in an instant. All light can be used to see as well as temporary blind your threat. My current go to is a 9007 with a M622V with a tape switch 12:00 for the M622V and 1:00 for the 9007. With this set up I can set the 9007 illuminator for wide short distances and the M622V to IR for a longer reach or  switch the 622V to white light activation. Also the 9007 as well as the 622V have on board switches for activation. Another cost effective option is using a Steiner OTAL-C IR @ 329.00 new laser only in place of the 9007. The biggest difference is you have to live with having to switch from IR to white light if you run a M952V/M622V or run an additional illuminator.

Looks like the 9007 is the way to go. I'd probably put the 9007 on my 10.5"sbr with a 300v Surefire, and a 600 series vampire light on my mk12. May go with the 9007 on that as well. What a money pit
