The place where I work ships some of our instruments in pelican cases. These have the .5" cubes marked off and you just pluck out the places where you want cavities to be, but I believe if you order so many of them, they will CNC out the foam to your specs. If enough people agree on a setup maybe all you guys wanting pelican cases can set up a group buy.

A 1720 can fit a 16" AR with a collapsible stock and a 20" AR with A2 stock, so I would think that the 1750 is overkill for two carbine length rifles ( unless you were going to use the additional length to store other gear ).

What is the issue, moisture or is it volatiles emitted by the foam? I'd like to use a Pelican case for long-term storage. Would the addition of sufficient dessicant render it safe for long-term storage? Otherwise, (but more trouble) I could rig it with fittings for a nitrogen purge and store it under slight positive pressure. Hell, for that matter I could store it in argon. Got to be a way to do this! |

I have a newbie question about Pelican. First off, thanks for all the links and pics in this post. I've got a few cheap cases here and there for other rifles but the Pelican case concept (as presented here) makes a lot of sense. Being able to carry multiple mapgs, etc at once to the range is ultra convenient.
My question is: Why do I always hear "Pelican"? Is it that these guys are the only ones doing it? Or is it a matter of, they're just the best? Thanks! I'm not rich and so every penny I spend on a case, is another penny not spent on ammo! |

I got mine at Cabelas. $189 for the 1720 and $199 for the 1750. You can find them cheaper on the internet, but then you will pay high shipping and supposedly if you ever have a problem, you take the case back where you ought it and they make it right. That is hard ot do when you buy one off of ebay.
Every now and then Cabelas sends out those coupons for so much off your purchase over a certain amount. Get on their mailing list and try that. That is what I did. I got my 1720 for right at $160. |

Unless you find them on sale, this is the cheapest place I have ever seen Pelican cases.

I don't know about best, but I was able to get Sportsman's Warehouse to price match the best price I could find online ( www.boss-safety.com at the time). Saved shipping, picked up sales tax. Probably a wash, but I got the opportunity to give my business to a shop I genuinely like. |

Most cases are outfitted with open cell foam, which "collects" moisture from the humidity in the air and other sources (slobber from the mouth breathers looking at your kit). Closing the case creates a independent atmosphere with no airflow and that constant level of humidity. Temp increases and decreases can cause it to condense on the weapon, providing a favorable environment for oxidation. Some folks have good luck doing it, I've had some rust issues doing it. If you have the capacity, a positive pressure nitrogen environment would probably do the trick, but that's a little extreme for a rifle case.  When you do this, post pics.

IMHO it's a good idea to cut these in a way that you store the magazine separately, instead of in the well. This will allow you to transport the rifle across state lines under Title 18, Part I, Chapter 44, §926A "Interstate Transportation of Firearms" without having to lose the room for one magazine.

Why lean towards Storm ? to me the Pelican seem better, plus they have better colors....like Dessert tan, which Storm doesnt have !

Well, color is not an issue for me because I'll use black. We use the Pelican's for our Beanbag guns in our trunks. Long before I new of the Storm cases I had thought the handle and latches seemed to suck on the Pelican's. It seems to me that Storm has filled that void. Of course it all boils down to personal preference. For me, I'll be loading it in and out of a car every day, so ease and comfort is an issue. I think both companies make a sturdy enough case to protect the weapon.

Actually, Storm cases are available in 6 colors, plus the carry handles are more comfortable and the latches are better.

I have a few different sized Pelican cases for my GPS all the way up to a 1520 currently used to tote around my laptop,external hard drive, laptop cooler, etc.... I am getting ready to order a 1720 for my M4 through Optics Planet. I have not yet had a problem with a Pelican case and I have not seen enough of the Storm Cases around me in use to change my decision.

Im sticking to Pelican.....just ordered my 2nd one, the 1720 for my other 2 ARs.... I like the fact that you can get them in Desert Tan, thats a plus for me.....they're also great tough cases

The Hardigg Storm cases come in "coyote tan", same thing. Like I said in my review they both are good cases. It does seem strange the loyalty that people have to Pelicans that have never compared them to the Storms cases. Most posts from people that prefer the Storm have compared them and like the more secure latch system and padded handle.
According to Mike at LaRue tactical they sell the storm cases because they think they are better. He specifically mentioned the latch system. I don't work for Hardigg and don't care which one you buy but IMNSHO the storm is a better product for the same money. |

Amazing what you can fit in a 1720. And yes, that's Gen 2 NV, Night Optics D440 + Mag Doubler + LR Pro Illuminator = 6x out to around 400 yards.

Its funny you should ask this becuase I was looking at this thread to see just that. I think it can be done with the 44 inch case, but it would be nice to see an example first. So has anybody done it? Thanks |
