So I think I'm going to take the plunge on an EOTech. I plan to mount directly to my flat top upper. Will this method retain zero when unmounted and put back into place or is that what the fancy QR mounts are for?

What makes the 552 model NV compatible vs. the 512?

What kind of "AA" batteries does the 512 take? Regular ol "AA" or some fancy lithium batts.? EOTech claims 1100 hr. batt. life. Is this accurate and at max brightness or min.?

Cheapest I can find them is $310 shipped...anyone have a cheaper source before I place my order? Thanks!!!

I would grab the 512 if you can get it for $310. As far as batteries go just plain AA batteries like Duracell or Energizer should work fine. I just bought a 512 last week, I could not justify buying the 552 NV model because I don't own any NVGs nor will I probably ever own any.

Someone with much more knowledge of EOTechs will be along to answer your other questions.

1. The 552 has an extra button in the middle that switches the reticl to NV compatible brightness.

2. While the 552/512 can use regular AA batteries do yourself a favor and stick to Energizer Lithium batteries, you will not regret it.

3. The Lithium AA time of 1100 hours is on setting 12 which is the default setting when it's first turned on. The EOTech has 20 brightness settings.

4. The $310 you mentioned is a great price for the 512 get it now!

I ordered some 2900 mah Battery Station lithium AA's when I ordered my CR123's. Hope these will work alright, I think they're 1.5v instead of 1.2v. I called EOTech but they weren't available. $310 new from dealer IS a great deal, guess what I'm after is a like new second hand one. Been watchin the EE, but nothing yet. I'll give it till Fri. and if I don't come up with anything I'll just order new.

I have 2 512s (along with a 511 and an old 502) and I love my 512s.

I always check zero after removing/remounting them (which I do very rarely), just in case. I zero mine at 50 yards and haven't had to make more than a very minor adjustment yet.

Within +/- 1moa IF you follow the directions printed in the instruction sheet.

The LaRue gives a much better return to zero with less effort.

What makes the 552 model NV compatible vs. the 512?

The NV switch which dims the reticule to another range (which is adjustable) that can't be seen by the eye - only with NVG.

What kind of "AA" batteries does the 512 take?

Alkalines, Lithiums, and NiMH.

EOTech claims 1100 hr. batt. life. Is this accurate and at max brightness or min.?

That is at visible setting 12 (out of 20) using Lithium AA batteries. That setting is great for indoors, or overcast days. Too dim for bright daylight and too bright for night use.

I don't remember off the top of my head because they are in emails at home, but I got the names from the other two EOTech threads here in this forum titled "Cheapest place to find EOTech" or something to that effect. I emailed the dealers mentioned and two came back with $310 shipped. One of them was Tim something-or-other. Most of the other "big name" dealers are quoting $330 +.
