so it's confirmed the 553 is also for the general public now?

I too am interested in the 553.

What is the battery life on the 553?

I spoke with Eotech's customer service rep on the phone today. While making arrangements to send in my old Rev D for some work I asked about the 553.

It will be available for sale. It's going to be presented at the SHOT show next month. Unfortunately the magnifier, magnifier base, and PVS 14 ring will be further out. If we're lucky by summer.

I believe he said battery run time on the 553 is appx. 1100 hours.

Military designation of the 553 was advised by him as being the SU/PEQ2

Grant any guess on a 553 and I've seen you hint at a Larue replacement mount?

Wow. I bought something at the right time for once. I think that's supposed to be one of the signs that the world is ending.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
I never buy before the price goes up!
Mine shipped yesterday.

So you guys already ordered and have gotten/are getting a 553?

Not me, can't speak for the others. I got a 512 - but everything went up except the 553 (it isn't available yet).

I just got off the phone with EO tech and they said:

The 600meter magnified EO tech is under re-design, meaning it will not be finallized and released until mid summer or even as late as December 2006.

The customer service rep mentioned that the 553 will be released in March with a std 65MOA reticle.

HOWEVER
If we could get 250 EO tech 553 sites ordered, they can do any reticle we want, and that means :

The 600meter dot reticle with 65 MOA ring they currently have already developed would be availible to be run and shipped IMMEDIATELY in March to coincide with the release date of the 553

I can tell you with 65MOA/600yd/meter reticle you have my pre-paid order locked, I want an EO tech I can use with night vision and a Samson/Aimpoint quick flip for work at ranges from 100-600meters. I think a AR15.com group buy is in order to lock these down before we have to wait till mid summer or December 06. We have to have a dealer to conduct such an order and I guess it might as well be C4Igrant

Found these on the net I think this is a 553 but I doubt the finish is std.

The rep was telling me that there is a way to range with the 65MOA ring and 600meter combo but it isn't the greatest. Supposedly a 6foot tall man stands center of the reticle- dot to ring at 200yds, center to two thirds at 300, center to half way at 400 etc-- the dot is supposed to be the size of a human head at 400 as well. That is a method but not much of one since you are far more likely to see shoulders than a full silouette; but the advantage with that reticle is time to the order.

Custom reticles are a possibility and they could do an NSN reticle, however the reason the engineering team went with the 100,400,500, and 600 dot reticle is because the dots are actually 1/3MOA etched into the glass and the human eye sees them as 1MOA. Any line or dot would be visible to the human eye and the dots are not distracting in use whereas a horizontal stadia would be distracting. Now that that makes sense to me I see the four dot reticle as the way to go with this magnified/non magnified concept.

The sight is holographic and there is a potential for a design that would display a range scale upon looking slightly sideways through the sight, however this has no application under single-plane magnification and thus is useless for it.

Nope, I ordered the 511.

I was referring to the fact that all Eotech prices have gone up.

The 553 doesn't fit a need I have at present.
It's more expensive than the AA model, but only gives an extra 100 hours battery time.
I'm not interested in an add-on magnifier for an Eotech.

I wanted the smaller sight.
The 200 hour battery life won't be a problem for me.

Darn.

Looks like I'll have to save a few more pennies up before I get another 512.

I'll take 1.

yea I just ordered a RRA Entry yesterday and also got an EOTech 512 for it. Today my dealer told me the price went up on the EOTech and it was a good thing I got it when I did! Every penny counts!!!

I jsut pruchased my first EOTech this past Sunday at a show. A 552. Got it for $400 including tax. Put it on my K3B (only AR I have with a flat top). Haven't been able to sight it in yet but it's going to be fun to learn how to use. Befoe this, my only other optics have been a T168 scope.

Why don't they just come up with a Dragonav style rangefinding system for a 24" target with some drop stadia lines each equal to 18" apart at those set ranges? That would make a cool holo-sight, range finding, bullet drop, 1x for fast CQB.
