Hey Lumpy, try some failure drills if you can. I am still working on it, but 2 to the chest 1 to the head, isn't as fast for my TA31. I think the phoria (?) is messin' with me on snap drills. I'll be interested to hear how this work for you. Thanks.....Chad

Even the Israelis are using them these days:

Shooting plans went down the tube for this weekend...freakin monsoons.  Before the week is out I hope to have a range report.

If you can just zero the tip of the Chevron at 100 meters, and you have it mounted to a flat topped 14.5" barrled gun, the BDC will be spot on!

SinistralRifleman

How did you cram that Arms 40 under that Acog on a TA51 mount.  I have always wanted an Arms 40 but refuse to go to an Arms 19 or 19s.

Well time and weather finally allowed me to get some rounds through this thing.

One word:  SWEET!

First 3 shots off the bench with Black Hills 55gr FMJ did a 1.5" group.  A couple clicks of windage and it was dead nuts on. Excellent for non-match ammo and a well worn Bushmaster 1/9 14.5 M4 barrel.

The clarity of this thing is amazing.  I also did some fast shooting under 15 yards and the BAC worked amazingly well for me.  Just playing with the thing I had concerns about being able to focus quickly with the BAC at close range.  In practical use it was FAST.  I felt MUCH more confident taking short range head shots.  I dont think I was any slower (or faster for that matter) at close range than I am with my Aimpoint, but I found myself not having to concentrate as hard when making precise close range shots.

I liked the donut of the TA31 for close range shots.  Were I to build a precision rig, Id probably get another TA31A just to have the precise tip for the long range shots.  I have to get this out and try some 300yd shots.

For a CQB gun, Im still a believer in the Aimpoint as a the best tool.  On a general purpose gun thats likely to take long range shots, the ACOG is the way to go.  You get the best of both worlds.  Close range speed and long range accuracy.  Not to mention good light gathering in dim light.

Lumps you bastard, now I got to get one too.  I'm trying to sell my ELCAN and Reflex II to help fund a TA31 with 19S.  Gonna have lots of fun things to do next week, put together the KAC FF MRE RAS on a new upper, get a TA31....[:D]

Great post lumpy.

Any pics of that krispy kreme? Just tell the cops it was taunting you and you'll be ok.

Sold my NSN- couldn't get over the backup sights being off on a $750 optic. Retical was slow and washed out at dusk.

Now I'm really torn between the TA31 and TA31F! I know you guys said to go with the TA31, but I too have an Aimpoint for the up close and personal stuff. So, question is, do I need the speed of the doughnut, or precision of the chevron? Do I really need an ACOG at all? This is going on a 14.5" M-4 with a Phantom. With the 14.5", do I have enough range to be within fragmentation to justify the ACOG?

UHG!!! [:X*] I'm sooo confused!

Duffy,
4 or 5 of them? You're a SICK man. You gotta quit cold turky. Send them all to me for safe keeping while you break this addiction. [:D]

Just read the thread on triangle reticals. It cleared things up. (he he rhymes and pun all in the same line) TA31 it is. I like jelly filled please. Hay WES...

lol M4 man I didn't say I was one of them, though I did buy my 3rd one a few minutes ago.  After that it'd be a long while before I get another, TA01NSN, TA11 and TA31 oughta last me a while.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but it was my understanding that with the 14.5" barrel that even muzzle velocity is not fast enough to produce the yaw/tumbling/fragmentation result that makes the .223/5.56 an effective caliber.  Much less at any distance.  This is why soldiers were reporting lack of effectiveness in the M4 rifle in these recent conflicts.

And the even funnier thing in the US military there is no such thing as a "confirmed kill."  Sounds great, but they really don't exsist.

I think you're referring to the issues with the M855 ball ammunition. This is why I opted to go with the BH 77gr otm NATO pressure stuff from the group purchase. It should get me out to 200 meters, possibly 250 meters. It’s still not that far. Thus, the dilemma as to the need for an ACOG on this set up. I may just have to use it as a carbine. [;)]

I still like my Aimpoint for short range work, but Im really liking the magnified optics light gathering ability at night.

Lumpster,
Good to hear from you. Does the ACOG gather light, or impose a tritium retical? Sounds like it's working out for you.

Thinking about using the aimpoint on the 14.5", and going with an 18" SPR upper with the acog for more open enviroments. What do ya think?

Tritium is just bright enough to see in very dim light.  Magnified optics always suck in more available light to some degree.  It makes identifying targets easier.

My TA31 will eventually be on a 20" A4 upper.
