144 of various types ranging from Pmags, lancers, OKAYs, and D&H (a 1-2 here and there of other cheaper mags just for shits and giggles)

10 per long gun and 6 per hand gun.  This is the correct answer.

This.  $200 stamp per mag.  And we'll just ask them how many they have....!

unless you run a lot of competitions and training, you really don't need that many.   Plastic will age regardless of use so stocking piling plastic mags and expecting them to be good in 40 years might not be the best plan.  Esp. if you keep them in the garage or shed.

7 per gun.  Maybe 10 backups.  Another 10 if you don't want to put all your eggs in one basket in case of theft or fire, store off site.

If you are fairly young, add another 10.  If you have two ARs and under the age of 30, 50 mags is more than enough...     Most third world militias of a dozen guys don't have that many mags.

Unless you are heavy into training and competition, you might have one fail a year, maybe.  Key is to mix up your brands and vintages so one mfg flaw doesn't render them all garbage with time and use.

There are so many AR mags in the wild, I cannot imagine them ever being in high demand in case of a ban, even if its still legal to transfer them.   Pistol mags are where its at.  What is your stock of relatively new handgun mags like P320 or VP9/P30?
View Quote

I am indeed into competition and training.
Agreeing with you - I prefer 20 mags per rifle and 10 per pistol.
I also definitely agree on the smorgasborg approach - do not have all your eggs in one basket, especially for mfrs.

ARs?  At least 50 loaded mags, not sure on the exact number.  10 mags for my VZ58, 13-15 for my Scorpion, maybe 15 AK mags even though I got rid of them.  Only keep about 6-8 mags for each of my handguns.

Just did an inventory yesterday.

28 7.62x51 pmags

52 30 round pmags, a mix of gen 3 and gen 1 and 2.

33 20 round pmags

15 30 round usgi and 15 20 round usgi

thats probably enough for me for the rest of my lifetime and doesn't include the ones that are already in rifles and range bags.

This. And the Anti-Gun folk are learning from their mistakes.

The horrible feeling that you can no longer buy new production High Capacity mags ( for anything .. 10/22 , Handguns, Rifles )  .. and may not ever be able to again. Left a sore scar.

Granted mags were still available, but not even close to the old price, and any order you placed may or may not show up.

For the most part any order was a full on crap shoot.... And places like CTD were charging crazy prices.... and still sold mags.

Currently quality mags are cheap.... buy what you feel comfortable with. I would say at least 15 quality USGI metal mags, and 15 quality Poly Mags ( Lancer , Magpul )

Properly stored, they will last a long time.

I would say at least 50 of each :) but yeah I agree.

I currently have 450 AR15 mags, 30 AK47 mags, and 45 Glock 17 and 19 mags in my SHTF stash. I also have extra mags and my range mag stashes in addition. I remember the AWB days, both the federal and Kalifornia ones. I moved to Nevada in 2006 and slowly started building up my arsenal, ammo, and magazine stockpiles. I will not be stuck in that AWB predicament ever again. I am a single guy with no kids and will 99.9% die this way. I have enough to last me for my lifetime and to leave plenty to my good friend, his wife, and their 5 kids who are the beneficiaries of my will and trust. Mags get used up, lost, stolen, broken- we need to account for this when stockpiling mags. Any future magazine ban will most likely not have a sunset clause and maybe grandfathering too, drying up any legal acquiring after that point- we need to account for this also.
The first pic is one third of my SHTF stash (too lazy to drag out the other 2 tubs from the back of my closet) and the second pic is the rest of my AK47 mags, my AK74 mags, and my AR and AK drums. The third pic is my rifle range mags and Magpul and Glock OEM 9mm mags. The last pic is my 1911, Canik, and HK VP9 and USP9c mags. I also have extra mags in addition to these that I can sell, trade, or give away.

Just got rid of about 20 used mags (USGI surplus). Sold all my NIW magazines a couple months ago. Will be selling more. Realized that I don't need so many magazines. I don't know why people stock up with 100+ magazines. The magazines will outlive most of you. The springs will last decades of use. When I realized that I had so many magazines that are years old and have never been used once and will most likely never be used, I decided to downsize and sell off a bunch.

What happened? Did you only have 3 mags and need some? If they ban 30 round magazines again what will happen to all the magazines you have now? I have about 20 magazines for each rifle. Even if I ever get back to regular shooting, I would never wear through those.

I do get buying some for supply but buying a hoard of magazines just in case they ever ban them? We gun owners sure can be peculiar.

About 60. I can't really afford to just buy hundreds of them just to have them. I would rather put that money towards Gold, silver, ammunition etc.  To be honest, you have to look at the percentage of chance that you would have to use a ton of magazines. Do I think we could have some kind of natural disaster or Civil War that would overwhelm the police? Maybe. But personally I'm putting that down into the 10% chance or less in my lifetime. So I have to make the best decisions for what I think will actually happen in my lifetime... as far as what money I'm going to set aside for something.

If we are in a Civil War I don't think anyone would be going through over 100 loaded magazines in one location and still be alive. Barrel would probably be cooked as well.

If we are in a Civil War, 100 loaded magazines gives 10 family members 10 loaded magazines.  You have to sleep sometime.

I am sure most of the people here with 100+ magazines have 10 family members living in the home. Large families aside, better to spend that extra money on ammo than magazines. The current ammo situation is a prime example.

After reading more of this thread, I am getting a little concerned about the degradation of the polymer mags in the collection.  I am heavily invested in the Magpul/Lancer brand and not so much in the GI aluminum type....

They are stored in tubs, in my garage, but I may find a place inside the house. Only 30 are stored loaded, the rest are unloaded.
