Wasn't sure of the caliber, I thought there was a slight diff between the 223 and the 5.56.  Thanks buddy.

There is a diff. between the ammunition.  No difference in the magazines however.

Remember, dont shoot 5.56 in a .223 chamber.  Bad things may happen.

However shooting .223 in a 5.56 is OK, just not the other way around

If the gun says 5.56 and .223 it's safe to shoot both

By the way, you will get bashed for asking stupid questions around here.

That fortunately was NOT a stupid question.

depends on what part of the gun, right?

if the barrel is marked 5.56mm, then you are definitely OK.  We are concerned with the chamber and throat of the barrel.  Lowers can be swapped around but barrel markings can't

In any AR you are fine shooting 223 or 5.56. The 5.56 cartridge is basically the same dimensions as a 223 except for a slightly longer neck. But it also has a higher powder charge, hence more powerful. Any AR chamber can handle the higher pressures. But you are better off with a 5.56, the bigger chamber dimensions usually makes it better for more ammo. The 223's tighter chamber dimensions make a little more prone to fouling and jam ups. My AR is a CMP competition model with a 223 rem chamber. Supposedly its more accurate, but it definitely is much more picky about what ammo will function in it.

Unless you plan on doing any match shooting you are best off with a 5.56 chamber.

OK, so I guess my question will be REALLY stupid, but here goes:

I bought a bushmaster SL last week and havn't shot it yet (my first AR).  Question- the ejection port cover, if it is closed, do you just shoot the rifle and it opens, or do you have to open it manually?  I read the literature that came with it but it doesn't say...

Thanks

mmm
