I know they haven't bought any since the 1970's but do they still use the one's they got or did they get rid of them?

Yes, there are units still using the 20rnd mags.  My old Army Guard unit has hundreds of them...

Edit:  I say old unit, for I am on active duty now.  I have yet qualify since coming on active duty, so I don't know if it is just a national guard thing.  I'm currently in flight school and will be qualifying with the beretta, but no M-16 for a while... [:(]

Although, it is a PITA to clean an M-16 the way Uncle Sam wants it done...

Good thing I have my bushy... [:)]

I would venture to guess its more by choice rather than being issued.

If it was possible, I still don't believe that he would. Same reason he won't air his balls out and talk about the AWB. POLITICS

Hilary will have them switch to 5 rounders when she is president.  And They will only be allowed to use live ammo when they go on missions to distract from clinton scandals!

But it is known that they've crushed many, many thousands of them, some that were still new in the boxes, since Klinton banned surplussing of them in '97.  Several folks on the board have actually been involved in that painful process...

I work on an Air Force base and I've never seen a 20 round mag here. Unless they just use them to qualify with. All the gate guards and folks running around the perimeter have 30s - -

I've been issued 20 round mags by the Army before.  Granted, I was also issued an XM16E1 with a chrome bolt carrier group, too.

USAF hasn't used 20 rounders for actual issue in a long time.

The USAF still has a few running around as well as old A1 M-16's. I have seen a lot of 20's here in A-stan both with the AF & Army.

Immediately after the events of September 11, 2001; I recall seeing 20 rounders in use by airport security details during my travels.  I don't remember which airports.  I was surprised at their using the 20 round mags and tempted to inquire about it, but I decided I'd better keep my questions to myself.

We still have and use alot of 20 round mags, mostly for range mags, Qualification and marksmanship training and as substitute issue if there are not enough 30 round mags  available for excersises etc.
Gate guards, security forces are issued 30's. Also all weapons stored in coffins are packed with 2 ea new 30 rd mags per rifle .
20 round mags hold up too use so much better and are more reliable than the 30's that I don't see us getting rid of the rest of ours anytime soon...
