Thermold actually had a 30/45 round mag. It's purpose is to be able to load a 30 round mag and keep it loaded for an extended period of time without worry of spring strenth lessening or feed lips warping. The bottom of the mag extends taking the stress off the spring and fed lips but when needed can be pushed back into the mag. With the mag in it's extended position, 45 rounds could be loaded into the magazine. I've seen some floating around the EE with pics.
