I have a couple hundred rounds of TAP 75gr that I keep loaded for defense.

I plink with 3131A and American Eagle 55gr.  How good are those two for defense as a back up to the TAP?

Q3131A is a primary SHTF ammo!

Don't use it for plinking!

AE has a little less velocity and does not fragment as well.  Q3131A is loaded to 5.56 specs, higher pressures.  AE has sealed primers but I am not sure of the case necks.  Fine range ammo though and I would no want to be on the wrong end of it.

All my XM193 is packed up so well that unless we have a very long term SHTF situation I will never set my eyes on it again.  Except for the at the ready XM193 in mags.  But it gives me pleasure looking at the cans and knowing it's there.

IIRC Hornady .223 75-gr TAP (red box), TAP-FPD 75-gr (black box), and Black Hill 75-gr .223 (red/blue box) all used the same bullet. Then the Hornady .223 75-gr HPBT Match (OTM) is the exact same bullet but without cannelure. And the Hornady 5.56 75-gr TAP (#8126N) uses the T2 which is entirely different.

And if I was you, I would not used Q3131A for just plinking! Yet as far as I know AE 55-gr is good ammo for plinking.
However I do not know how fast of a twist (1/7, 1/9, or 1/12) you have.
But if you are using a 75-gr bullet for SHTF/HD, then you must have like a 1/7 or 1/9 twist. So you might want to look at  maybe like Black Hill 5.56 77-gr SMK for your back-up SHTF/HD ammo.

In which case please read the following:

The 5.56 TAP uses the T2 bullet which is designed specificly for the M4 carbine. It has a much more straighter ogive than regular 75 grain match and 75 gr. w/ cannelure.

There's a good write-up on the 5.56 TAP T2 in this months Police Marksmen

If you got enough Q3131 in stock go shoot all ya want!
No reason to save it unless you aint got much?
Hell I shot up a bunch of XM193 last week!
Xm193 dont shoot as tight as Q3131 in MY AR`S but I did keep 2 bandos of it just incase I will run out of Q3131 wich I wont!!
