I have around 800 rounds of S&B SS109 which I got at a price which is very hot/accurate ammunition that I am very happy with. For those who don't know, S&B M193 has a thick jacket and will not fragment. Does the 62grn SS109 FMJ bullet have the same overly-thick jacket that thier M193 has which is not conducive to fragmentation? This is commonly encountered ammunition and its accuracy/velocity and price make it very appealing, provided its capable of fragmentation. Does anyone have a S&B SS109 which they could pull and photograph and compare to IMI or ADCOM M855 or similar ammunition? I don't have the means to conduct this experiment myself, but if anyone else does, I and others I am sure, would be very interested to know the results. Thanks for the help.

S&B uses steel as a jacket material, which is why it won't fragment.

I would use a magnet to check the jacket of the SS-109 that you have. If it sticks very readily, then it probably has a steel jacket and also will not fragment. However, I have noticed that a USGI M855 will weakly attract a magnet due to the steel used in the core, so if you can compare it to a regular SS-109 type bullet it may be helpful.

FMJ, you totally missed the boat.....While the velocity/accuracy of this ammo is superb, its fragmentation ability is unknown, which is why I asked. Standard velocity figures are based upon a common jacket material and thickness. If a bullet has a thicker jacket, it requires more velocity to fragment, and even then it may not fragment. S&B M193 is also excellent ammunition, but despite having good velocity/accuracy, it will not fragment because of its thick jacket. I was curious to see if thier SS109 has the same overly thick jacket. I was hoping someone had pictures of the base of the S&B SS109 bullet to compared to that of IMI or LC M855. If its too thick to adequately fragment, then that isn't necessarily a bad thing as this could be an asset in some media. I will have to do some additional testing of my own to investigate these possibilities.
