Is anyone aware of a comparison done between the ball and AP loadings of both of the above NATO rounds?

An ex-Marine friend of mine wants data to justify my claim that 7.62 NATO is a better hard cover penetrator.

Cover mediums such as wood, concrete, glass, and mild steel would be great.

Not just poking holes in cover, but how effective the round is when it arrives in the bad guy... 7.62 is miles ahead.

Anyone expecting "hard cover" penetration from 5.56 need his friggin' head checked.

No data necesssary IMO.  Go shoot a medium size tree at 200yds w/ both rounds and see which one makes exit holes.

I think I've read on here about 5,243 times in the past 6 months about how the 5.56 is the best round to use in a house b/c it won't over penetrate.

Not trying to stomp on the .223/5.56, but it seems like some people want to have their cake and eat it too.  It is either a "superior" penetrator, or it's not.

I could see a smaller, higher velocity round pierce certain materials better than a larger, slower projectile, and vice versa.

Btw, according to the box of truth, 5.56 goes right through dry wall. Not exactly hard cover, but it does dispel the "home defense" rumor.

The problem with 5.56 isnt actually the barrier penetration itself, but what the bullet can do behind it. The bullet penetrates stuff like common trees or brickwalls but is actually disintegrating as it does so, having no substantial wounding capacity anymore, apart from debris injuring exposed skin etc. .
So its true, M80 has much better intermediate barrier penetration capabilities for common obstacles than 5.56 since it retains more mass and integrity.
7.62 AP penetrates deeper than 5.56 AP.
