You saw that too, huh? For that price they better have a zombie jump out of the bullet as it travels and rip the jugular out. I seriously doubt its that much more accurate then any other true match round and I'd bet a good reloader could tailor a round to a particular gun to beat it easily. Not worth $1.75 a round.

The new M-118 LR is an improvement over the original M-118 SB, but you are still much better off with Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills Match. With the Federal or Black Hills you should shoot at least 0.5 MOA better than the M-118.

Those are just some of my most recent finds, there are plenty more out there. At those prices, which are comparable with the M-118, I think most everyone would agree that you are better off going with the Federal or Black Hills.

I tried for a while to shoot M-118 (both SB and LR) so that in the event that I had a supply problem and could not get the Federal or Black Hills that I would be proficient and ready to use the M-118. Bottom line, my groups were always, 0.5 to 1.0 MOA better with the Federal and Black Hills. For example my Rem 700 would shoot 0.5-1.0 MOA all day with Federal and Black Hills, and the best I could average with the M-118 was 1.5 MOA, my Rem 700 did not like the M-118.

If you are Military and have the potential to be sent downrange, then by all means you had better be able to shoot M-118, and I hate to say it but you may also have to be ready to shoot some delinked M60 ammo. That being said, I don't know of anyone who would shoot M-118 over the Federal or Black Hills if given the choice. If you are thinking of shooting M-118 based on price savings, shop around and you should be able to shoot the Federal or Black Hills for almost the same price.

You are obviously free to shoot whatever you like, but I just hate to see people struggling and getting frustrated with their shooting, and it turns out simply switching ammo could make a big difference.

that ammo is m118LR PD, not worth what CDT (ETS) is charging, ammoman has the same ammo for less. Bullet should be a 175 BTHP from Sierra Bullets. If it is not LR then 173 grain.

Yep, box says XM118, seconds so I doubt it'll group as well as tier one stuff.

I'd take G308M from Georgia Arms over any M118/LR.

Is there a site where I can buy just one box of it?  Just to say I've got some 'military sniper ammo'?

I've had very good luck with M118LR ammo.  I bought a few cases from CMP a couple years ago for 315.00/500 rnds.  Its grouped .5 MOA or less at 100 yards just like my FGMM and BH 175's.  It did chrono about 20 FPS slower than the others and powder is very dirty.  However at 1000 yards it grouped alot better than the others and seems more temperature stable throughout the year.  I dont know how the PD stuff is, im debating on getting a case myself since i cant find the regular anywhere right now.

To try and clarify, because I don’t always seem to type what I am thinking,

The new M-118 LR, which has the 175 grain Sierra Matchking Bullet, should shoot as well as the Federal or Black Hills ammo loaded with a 175 Grain Bullet. As Ty36695 pointed out, it is capable of producing sub MOA accuracy

That being said, here in lies the problems with “M-118”:

Some of the “M-118” that is floating around out there is the older/original M-118 SB. This is the ammo that has the 173 grain FMJ BT bullet. Due to a number of reasons, including the FMJ Bullet, this “M-118” ammo does not shoot as well as the Federal, Black Hills, and new M-118 LR.

Most of the “M-118 LR” that is floating around out there is actually XM-118 LR PD. This is the M-118 LR that did not pass the quality testing and could not be sent to the Military. While some of this XM-118 LR PD may be as good as the “real deal” M-1118 LR, chances are some of the rounds are going to have a problem that will impact performance. While some of the rounds may shoot sub 1 MOA, some may also shoot in excess of 1 MOA. Obviously one of the big things that you want to avoid in “Match” or “Sniper” ammo is inconsistency.

If you could get your hands on “real” M-118 LR, than by all means I would say buy it and shoot it. But I am willing to bet that you are not going to have much luck finding “real” M-118 LR for sale.

On another, but very related note, can anyone tell me what is going on with all of the “M-118” ammo that is being offered:

“Lake City M118 .308 original US Military Sniper ammo marked "Long Range" 173 grain Sierra HPBT to be used in the M14, M24, M40A1 weapons systems, specs and designed to shoot 10 inch groups at 1000 meters, mfg 2003 and so rare we only have a few boxes to sell. 20 Round box, very limited supplies. Military sniper ammunition, 173 grain FMJ, M118 Long Range 20 round box.

Their own add is contradictory, is it a Sierra HPBT, or is it a FMJ? It also makes no sense because it has a 2003 mfg date, which would make it M-118 LR, and which would also make it a 175 grain SMK HPBT. Per the markings on the box this is also XM-118 LR PD, which also jives with it being the newer M-118 LR, but this also makes it a quality reject, not good enough for the Military.

This also makes no sense because it does appear to be the new M-118 LR which should have the 175 grain SMK HPBT, but they list it as having the 173 grain bullet. It is not clear if this is XM-118 PD, but I have a feeling that the white label that says Lake City Match was put over a XM-118 PD stamp.

Just some honest confusion, or just someone trying to baffle the buyer with BS to make a buck? I think you can probably figure it out!

does have some XM-118 LR PD for $16.00 a box, so I may just have to buy some to see just how good or bad this stuff really is.

Oh well when the Holidays are over and the weather breaks, I will make sure to post a range report. If anyone else has any recent experience with the XM-118 LR PD please share it.

Dark Sun Surplus had some M118LR PD for $8/box at the Richmond show last weekend.  I was tempted to get some, but I opted for Black Hills instead.  I need to zero a 700P and I can't have inconsistencies when trying to do that.  MJD
