I just recently purchased a Bushmaster 20" post ban AR-15. I am now in the process of accumulating ammo for it. I have 1000 rounds of Sellier & Bellot 55gr. I would like to get some SS109 in what I consider a large quantiy of 100 to 500 rounds but don't want to spend $300 for a 500. What is the best SS109 ammo? Is Olympic any good?(I have read about misfires and "FTE" on them) Is IMI good? Just basically need some information before I make a stupid newbie mistake!!! Thanks in advance!!

I've shot only about 200 rounds of Olympic SS109 but didn't have a misfire or even a missfeed. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Will make one comment, if you are fine with the S&B you will be fine with the Olympic. You want to upgrade, try some M193 or Q3131. Cleaner and sharper snap to it. Tj

IMI would probably be the best M855 type round you could get. M855 uses the SS109 projectile (otherwise known as the bullet [;)]). The S&B ammo is known to be problematic (there should be a post on this tacked up in the forum). For 55gr ammo Winchester Q3131A is very good for practice or plinking.

I have yet to find anything better than Win Q3131a in 55 grain ,xm193 fed /lake city seems the same to me .It's good for a lot more than plinking .If you have found something better i for 1 would like to know what it is .

South African 'battle packs' of M1A3 or M1A4. Chrono pretty much to M193 spec, brass cased, and have a much lower flash signature than Q3131A or XM193. Did I mention its also much cheaper? Unfortunetly most everyone is out of stock - though I keep hearing rumors that Sportsmans Guide.com will have some more in September - we'll see.

If it's SS109 you want, I'd get the IMI. It's the best new production SS109 out there IMHO. http://www.wideners.com/cart.asp?Action=Details&item=IMISS109 Otherwise I'd just select the Federal XM193, Winchester Q3131A or South African surplus when it becomes available again. It is cheaper and does everything as well as SS109 except long range penetration of steel. -Charging Handle

I agree excellent ammo but thought I would mention I really liked the 62 grain nato Swiss better. Excellent stuff.

If you are referring to the Swiss, I assume primarily due to the bullet weight it's very acurate and can't tell you much on penetration other than goes right through a mini-van. From what I've experienced it is more of a penetrator than fragmentation round. I'm sure some of these guys who experiement with ammo would know more than me. I primarilly shoot paper and an occasional can or gallon jug of water. Tj

OK Thanks for the input on the ammo, it turns out I am on the right track for the SS109 stuff but it turns out I might have problems witht he S&B ammo that I have. Now fo rthe next question where is the best price for the above mentioned 55gr XM193 or Q3131 ammo? What does it typically run per 1000!!![:)]
