Was a little bored today and took apart my 9mm Carbine's standard CAR buffer. Pulled out the steel weights (3) and filled the whole dealie with molten lead and put it back together. Mfer feels about twice as heavy now! Jeez! Quick question is, will this work as a replacement to the H/H2/9mm buffers?

I'm hoping so!

EEwww, very interested in the answer. Was just about to go looking for a heavy buffer for my 9mm.

Should have a range report soon. I'm assuming it'll work fine.

You should weigh it on a postal scale and see how much it really weighs.  I thought some others have done this and they couldn't quite get it to the same weight as the 9mm buffer.  I want to say they were only able to get it up to abotu 4.5 ounces, still an ounce shy of the 9mm buffer.

The standard car buffer was something like 3-3.5 ounces and the 9mm buffer is 5.5 ounces.

ETA: I believe the weights and rubber inserts are to aid in reducing bolt bounce, so packing it solid, may not be the ideal solution for some set-ups.

Take it to the clerk at the post office, they'll weight it if you ask....

I dumped the guts in a std 2.9oz CAR style, and filled it with #8 shot, it weighed 2.7oz.   You want weight, cut a piece of brass or tungsten to fit inside.

There is a post on this page, linking to a drawing, cut it out of steel, and bore the center to adjust the weight to where you want it.

I filled my carbine buffer with #6 shot and then proceeded to pack it
with steel rod and a 3 .lbs hammer. was able to fill it twice, repack it
again and it came out a bit heavier than the other carbine buffer i had
laying around.

What about soldering some lead into it?

Way ahead of you. Already used molten lead. 00 shot taken from a friend's reloading stash. :)

Seems pretty damned heavy! I'll use the scale at work and see what she comes out to.

interesting, tag to see the weight

Saw this Buffer Weight chart in the EE
AR1Parts-New-Lower Receiver\H1,H2,H3 And Endine Buffers!!!!
Shows all the different buffer weights, alot more than I thought, and the 9mm buffers are heavy!

Yeah i'm curious myself how the buffers worked. I read in one forum there are seperate pieces in there for a reason. They explained it like a dead blow hammer. When the bolt slams forward the laws of physics make it want to bounce back but the seperate weights slam into the head of the buffer a split second after it does to keep it from bouncing back. I'm wondering if you'll experience any, i think they call it bounce firing, by removing the moving parts out of the buffer...

Bolt bounce is only an issue with full-auto.  What happens is that the bolt slams shut, then bounces back just a little bit before being pushed back closed by the recoil spring.  If the auto-sear drops the hammer just as the bolt is bouncing back that will make a light hit and a jam.  Having the "flying" weight in the buffer hit the bolt just as it's starting to bounce back keeps it from jamming.  In a semi-auto the whole bounce cycle is over before you can pull the trigger again so it's a moot issue.

Can a light buffer cause double taps, theoretically of course.

My OLY GL9 double taps at least once per thirty round mag.  Its total stock, brand new, about 1500 rounds through it now.  Could +P+ be causing this or do I need a heavier buffer for shooting that type of ammo?  I have not tried any other ammo yet....replies are welcome tks

What are the 9mm "A", "B" and "X" buffers? Who has these for sale?

Hahn Precision and its dealers have the 8 oz version.  It's a must for 45 ACP but will work for 9mm application as well.

The "A",  "B",  and "X" buffers is "CAR style buffer intended for 9mm SMG use with a suppressor.

Adding a suppressor to a "blowback" action will generally raise the cycle rate/and allow the action to open a little early, allowing extra debris out the eject port.  The added weight will slow down the cycle rate, hold the bolt closed slight longer.

The  A, B, and X buffers is shown on Ken Elmores web site, and listed as factory COLT parts I think.

How much of an effect will it make when I cut down my barrel from 16" down to say around 9"? If I find a buffer and spring combo that I like and kills all the recoil with a 16" barrel am I in danger of it not working with a 9" barrel? What bout the Hahn 8.X oz buffer working with a 9mm with short barrel?

I see no problem what so ever... 16oz bolt, 8oz buffer, thats barely any more than an Uzi, and the AR has a lighter spring..

My M11 has a 16oz bolt, and 12.8oz buffer, and A2 rifle spring, but it is open bolt.

I did put the 12.8oz buffer in the AR, it went bang------thunk,  bang------thunk, way too much weight, especially having to overcome the hammer spring.

I put a standard "H" buffer in my Oly, and it did the happy dance, much to the surprise of me, rangemaster, and the PD shooting next to me. Longest was 7 rounds. Since it was the first shots out of the lower and upper, we thought it might need some break-in to act appropriately. After the third or fourth time, I packed it up and later put in an Enidine and MGI buffers in it.
It runs fine with them. The Enidine is in there now.

is it wrong to like the double taps?

I guess its kinda cool.  It would be even better if I could just flick the selector lever to 2 round burst and do it all the time but its not not set up that way.....SEMI ONLY
