Need help in how to remove the rear site on my A2 upper that was destroyed by a faulty round a couple of years back. I have a new upper that I want to transfer the site to.

Much appreciated

Vin

Here is a great video done by Larry Potterfield that covers the assembly of an A2 upper. Watch the part that assembles the rear sight and you will be good to go!

photos are in the archives. It was a rare Colt R6550 Z-cote AR that went kaboom when shooting some federal ammo. Since I have a place in Florida I an rebuilding a new lower and upper and salvaging what parts I can. There is an image of my damaged AR on google images if you search for Colt R6550gc.

I looked at the previous thread on this rifle. Did you ever determine what caused this? Squib?

Rifle was sent to Federal and they said it was an out of battery! Most gunsmiths believe it was a hot load. Barrel was completely clear, only thing left was the brass head of the round welded to the extractor. Have no idea where the rest of the brass case went, presumably out the front of the barrel as you can see the bcg is still stuck in upper receiver.

Out of battery does not make any sense. I know that most anything is possible, but the cut of the bolt carrier does not allow the hammer to strike the firing pin with the force required to detonate a primer.

Need to correct this statement! Went to shoot yesterday and had "failure to feed" issues. Broke it done to have a more careful look and found that the brass cartridge was still in the breach! 2 gunsmiths and Federal all had this rifle for a time and none of them saw this. In fact one gunsmith said the barrel was clear! With some poking, prodding and swearing it was finally removed an now feeds with no issues.

That's a trip. So it blew the head off of the case, blew the bolt back into the receiver; cracking it when unlocking. All the while leaving the remainder of the case in the chamber. Did you save what's left of the case? I'd contact Federal again.

It's incredible to think about the pressure required to severely over-gas the system like that. I would definitely talk to Federal again.
