Alright. I’ve read this through thoroughly and have a couple questions concerning the A2 mount.
Is the thumbscrew enough? I’m trying to find an old arms one. Does it loosen up? I was thinking of drilling and tapping the base and using 2 10-24 button heads to help hold the mount on. My plan is to do a BHD/blood diamond budget clone. I was going to use a primary arms 30mm red dot. Thoughts? Input and leads to a good quality A2 mount that I’m overlooking. |

No step on snek! NEED a Wilcox Aimpoint Comp Mount. |
That's hot.

Not exactly correct but this is a budget build. Still looking for a light to put on this.
I will be sending off for a stamp in the next few weeks because i prefer the Danny Archer look to the BHD look. Attached File Attached File |

Looks great you did a good job on the paint.

It's not 100% correct, but for your budget build here's a $50 light and mount combo to consider:
SUREFIRE TACTICAL LIGHT M25 MOUNT USED NO SWITCH (@ CDNN) Mine arrived in nice, lightly used condition. The mount clamps onto the front sight base. Pressure switches are available on eBay for around $15. |

Been working on mine.
I know M4 hand guards are non-accurate, but I like them better than the skinny ones on this build. Dunno why. So far, got this 1990s A2 Carbine by SoloDallas, on Flickr |

Concentrating on the (movie) optic: I am starting to seriously like the CompM2 again.
While it may be completely passe' as a red dot, it still works great. Acquired used bit by bit and put together again with covers, mounts and such. This is obviously the movie version optic. Original Aimpoint CompM2 by SoloDallas, on Flickr Attached File |

Now I am able to take out the battery and put it back in whenever I want to use it as a temporary solution. The rotary switch is marked Grayhill and they are still in business and apparently make switches for a lot of military equipment including weapon sights. Anyone else have a similar experience with a knob breaking off? If so, what was your solution? ... View Quote the legacy models use switches that are easy to turn past their intended limits, which eventually spins the switch inside the housing and leads to early failure. probably because it's straining the contacts and their connections. i have three legacy models and each one is like a game of memory with one of my kids, the adjustments don't use detents or momentary stops, and are generally brown and lumpy. at this point they're just for looks, no way i'd trust them for anything practical the newer models use set screws on the switch knobs that mate to flats on the switch. if i had a dollar for every time one of those knobs fell off, or when i found one at a range... i could buy a new car the legacy models are a lost cause unless you're an electronics wiz, have a metric ton of time on your hands, or are seriously handy the newer models just need a good cleaning and loctite (or adhesive) before cranking the set screw back down |

I always figured I was crazy, but my comp m2 has a case of the wobbly knob too.
I've been too chicken to open it up. maybe I'll clean off the work bench and take a look inside. |

I had plans for it to be a Kosovo/Kyle Lamb 723/727 upper but Dobs013 told me it needed to be a Daryl Holland clone. Even got the correct optic and everything. So off to the gunsmith it went to get the threaded insert epoxied and fitted to the upper. It’s a AR-10 tube so the mounting hardware is too big for the AR-15 receiver. A custom barrel nut is in order for it to work. |
