I was out last weekend running mine again.  First "AR" I bought, and I'm now at around 3000 rounds.  It's been an incredibly reliable and smooth shooting rifle.  The G2S trigger helps too!

I have one of the TD variants and use it exclusively as a 300BLK.  It has been running perfectly and I'm quite pleased with it.

My SR556 "Takedown" with a Vortex Viper PST 1 - 4 x 24 optic.

Ruger muffed the design of the bag.  It should be able to accept the upper with an optic attached.

I just bought the 556 Takedown! I haven't shot it yet, but I should be able to next week. Really looking forward to it. This is my first AR that I have bought, I've shot plenty just never owned one before.

My first generation SR556 and my SR556-VT before I had finished her upgrades, with their DI Olympic HBAR carbine cousin photo-bombing in the back.

My original SR556 by herself.

I just did a nice write up on my issue and was denied posting it because as a new member I'm limited to 2000 characters... O.K., so the short story I just purchased a .300 Blackout Barrel Kit for the SR-556 Takedown model and it came with a bayonet lug on the gas block and it has a nitride finish as opposed to the flat finish of previous SR-556 Rifles.  When was that change made?  Are the current SR-556 model rifles coming with the nitride finished barrel and bayonet lug?

Thinking of getting one of these...  I drooled over them years ago when I was shopping for my first AR but they were just too expensive. Now that I find out they are discontinued It seems they are getting harder to find just when I want to add one to the herd. One of my LGS has a new SR-556FB, asking $1575 which seems a little pricey to me. Buds has the complaint model with no flash hider and fixed stock for $1100. GB prices are about in line with my LGS.

Is the general consensus that the SR-556 is a good choice for the money or am I better off just sticking with something like a 6920?

The SR556 is still being produced but it is now a takedown model. This added a slight amount of versatility (can swap barrels from 223 to 300 Blackout) but at an increased cost. Too bad it took Ruger this long to finally address the weight issue.

The SR556 is a good gun and you'll find many happy owners. Is it better than a Colt 6920? I guess that depends on what you want to do. If you plan on replacing forends and such, the Colt is a better choice. If you want a gun that's fun to shoot and like the idea of a piston over a gas tube the Ruger is the way to go.

My advice would be to start watching gunbroker for an SR556E. Those are a "best value."

Thanks for the input. I did see the take down version. Not a real fan of the take down guns myself. I usually keep most of my guns pretty stock. Just wanting to add another AR and something a little different than a plain jane rifle.

I am starting to think getting the 556SC from buds and ditching the pinned stock and buffer tube for something else is my best bet since for the price of 3 pmags and a new stock I basically get the same rifle I actually think it looks better without the flash hider on it.
