Looking to build an A1 replica and was curious if the original carry handle was removable. Thanks.

They were not, as the previous posts said.

But several years ago a small shop made removable carry handles with the A1 sights.  I haven't seen any in years so l doubt new are still available.

So if you do run into an A1 flattop with a removable carry handle w/A1 sights its not a factory build.

That's the one.  Couldn't remember who was doing them.

Colt Canada/Diemaco also makes a detachable carry handle with A1 sights, though they did not necessarily try too hard to match the A1's form factor in the carry handle's design.

Cool unit, nonetheless. Had a chance to buy one for fairly cheap a couple years back, but am not planning to do an iron-sighted C8 replica, and didn't want to feel pressured by a random part I wasn't even seeking into starting another build.

Augee.

If you ever find another one, I would be very interested.
We had them here in Holland but they are not to be found for some reason.
Realy like the fieldsight over the A2.

Stef.

the AR platform never had a removable carrying handle until the M4A1 of 1994 & the M16A4 of 1998.

Superior arms also makes one, it is a little more sturdy than the CNC handle, but uses set screws.

The M16A2E1 and Colt ACR featured removable carry handles in the 1980s.

Someone around here has an original upper floating around, don't think they had the carry handle, though.

My favorite part is the integral rear BUIS design just for it's coolness and funkiness. In practice, I'm fairly certain I'd hate it, hahaha.

I have one of the CNC ones. It is very nicely made, and probably still available.

Holy smokes!  That's cool!

I imagine the back up sight would be kinda fun the first trip out then annoying after that.

Issued, not prototyped. There were two A1 pre-DMR style rifles issued with a scope mount and iron sights with no handle, though.
