Cross posted this From GD to get you guys input

Maybe it's my misspent youth watching Rat Patrol, I know not mutts, but I have a lead on a M151 in good shape and I'm tempted. A friend used to restore military vehicles and has a ton of spares for them.

I would want to do a desert recon kind of setup with it so please feel free to inspire me with your photo ideas and spend my money by talking me into or out of one.

I was thinking something like the Israeli M151A1 Shmira like this

Yes, I know it's a picture of a model but it was what I found like I was talking about with a quick search.

You want the A2 model.

Better (Safer) steering due to change of rear axle geometry...

I know crap about them but my friend turned me on to one.

I guess it's actually an aftermarket commercial unibody with demil parts installed onto it. He says it's really nice and only very subtle differences that only somebody who really knows what to look for would notice.

Has a machinegun mount and I think maybe a trailer too. I really need to go look at it but I'm trying to talk myself out of it.

Link for some information on the M-151

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M151_1/4-ton_4x4_utility_truck

The original and A1 model had a simple swing axle that could cause bad cornering going from under to extreme oversteer (Ala Covair)

As I understand, the bodies were required to be cut up in the De-Mil process.   Many M151s around in the USA civilian market are re-welded...

I have an 151a1.  It’s mainly used as a work bench or shelf in the garage, but when I do take it out and drive it indo enjoy it.

I recommend joint g838.org. It’s a great 151 based forum.

Saw someone blowing around St Augustine this weekend in one along with some other military 4x4 type vehicles. Not sure what was going on but it made me want one again. Good luck on your journey!!

That would be loads of fun!
Unfortunately I currently have more vehicles than parking space.

That would be fun to have!  I drove several different M151A1 and A2 models while on MP duty in the Mannheim/Heidelberg area for 32 months between 1973&76.  We also had four that we used for convoy monitor duty for REFORGER and Brigade 75 that had M60s mounted on a pedestal.  Looked cool but a cold and often wet ride with no top (luckily only on the gun jeeps, the others had canvas tops and doors).

M151 is a very good OFF road vehicle. T took then some amazing places and did amazing things with them.  I drove them occasionally in the MPs 74-77, and again at Camp Bullis, TX at USAF Security Police Tactics School 1980.  THEY SUCK ON THE HIGHWAY!! They limited us ti 45 MPH on roads.

Does anyone know where the name 'Mutt' came from? I enlisted in '78 and we just called them jeeps (not Jeeps® ).

There was a Mule at the military vehicle show that was really nice and I was trying to justify to move things around our hunting property but I chickened out and didn't even ask how much.

Does anyone have an actual photo of the US Marine Assault Jeep variant from the 1980s?

I think it would inspire us some more

I really like the M151 A1 and A2s, we had a dozen or so at Ft Carson (HHB-1/27FA '83-4 63B). Down range was a 4x4er's paradise, if I had one complaint its that the U joints are too small and one gets to replace a BUNCH of them it you wheel it much. But I must also profess that one of my favorite thing's to do was call out where is the operator for this vehicle, we need to perform some PMCS and off we'd go. At the end of my enlistment just before my unit went on reforger we took all of them to the depot for disposal, it was a most sad week knowing they would be destroyed. The last time I drove one was from Atlanta to Ft Stewart for annual training (GANG 190thMP '86) in a very heavy rain, I16...a long, long ride. Every semi that passed me dumped a foot of water, and no they don't go much over 45mph.

Yes, I feel lucky to have been there during the transition to the HMMWV and was able to be have an additional duty as an 0311 to instruct driving HMMWVs and the 151.  I did not get a lot of time with the 151 though.

Those posted above are really nice!

Well if I end up getting one I may be hitting you up for lots on info and more pictures!

What's the story on the 50 and M60? Are they active fulls or semis or just dummies?
