I just saw a SP053** at a pawnshop.

It had the + lower with the early 604 upper, slabside carrier, dimpled selector, mp "s" 12 barrel, 3 prong fs, skinny a1 grip, 3x USA made scope, colt bayo, and colt bipod.

...to bad it is in the "pawn" stage, not for sale.

I have a Coltguard SP1 in the 202 range, 202604, in fact.  I have had it since either very late 1984, or very early 1985, when my father purchased it brand new at a small shop called Dealers Outlet in Glendale AZ.  I paid for half, the other half was my HS Graduation Gift.  Technically, the rifle became mine, lock stock and barrel, on Sept. 7 1985, when I turned 18.  However, it was not until 1987, after Boot Camp at MCRD San Diego, Infantry Training School at Pendleton and 15 months on Guam, that I began to really break her in.  Today, I tend to treat her as something of a safe queen, seeing only occasional range trips and only with Q3131A, although she can digest Wolf if needed.  She has, over the years, fired a fair amount of Uncle Sugars fodder, as I spent 11 months as Pitt NCOIC at Range 214 just outside Camp Horno at Pendleton.  Occasionally, we would have Reserve and Army Guard units on the range on a weekend to qual.  Top was nice enough to allow me to bring my "Baby" along when I got stuck with weekend duty, to kinda soften the blow, and quite a bit of left over ammo found its way downrange, sharing the line with M-16A1's of every type and manufacturer.  She may not be Govt. Issue, but she damn sure served alongside, and was a damn sight more accurate than some of those worn out rifles.  She also swallowed the odd mag or thrice of M855, both during my Marine days and later as a Reservist.  She wont win awards firing the 855, but she is center of man at 300 with it.  Deep down though, I know she is lonely, longing for a partner R6001 and a 1911 dressed as she.  And a cousin R6000 but in a whole nuther shade of gray.

Deep down, I think she is longing for a set of triangular handguards.

The handguards on the rifle are from sometime in 1986, my folks gave them to me for Christmas, which my very cruel father included in my gift box they sent to Guam, where I had as much use for them as I did snowshoes.  Just a reminder that he had my rifle.  I have the original triangle guards, locked safely away, but I had the Harris bipod on her when I took the pic, something that does not work well on the original HG's.  I also have the original rear sight windage knob, also tucked away in the safe, as well as the original front sight post, but in truth, I much prefer the square version.  In those three things, the rifle is uniquely mine, and as I never, ever will part with her, it does not make much difference to me.  Although I do admit to swapping handguards just for giggles from time to time.

One thing, my baby drew blood, mine, not long after I got her.  I was home alone, sick, sometime during the winter of 85, attempting the manual of arms (or what I thought was the manual of arms) and grabbed the top of the triangle handguards with much snap and pop.  Doing so, I opened the palm of my hand rather nicely.  Having the flu and seeing my hand a nice bloody mess, I promptly went lights out.  I am very proud to say that just before crashing onto the bathroom floor, I did have the presence of mind to lean the rifle against the wall.  About the only thing I feel good about concerning that incident.  Wondered how the hell I was gonna ever make it as a Marine if I passed out at the sight of my own blood.  It was not my proudest moment, but at least I didn't drop my rifle.

I found a SP1 today at a local gun store.
The S/N was SP212686.
From what I can tell from the serial number info., the
rifle was manufacture between 1983 & 1985?

The rifle had a 16" chromed barrel and a collapsible stock.

I am interested in buying this as my first  AR.....

Looks like mine is from the 83-85 range. I bought it back in the 1997 time frame. Was in Florida before that. Details are as follows:

S/N SP185xxx
16" carbine, slab-side lower
Upper marked C H under rear sight.
Barrel marked C MP Chrome Bore, bird cage flash hider, flat slip ring
bolt marked CMP, carrier marked C, grooved for FA

All original as far as I know (FH and hand guards have been replaced, but I kept the originals, for those of you looking at the picture up close). Anyway to track down a more exact date?

I picked up a SP-1 this weekend.  All markings appear to be correct, with exception of the lack of a bayonet lug.

The only mention I've seen of this is in this thread:

http://beta.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=2&f=29&t=149163

His is a 72,xxx S/N, mine is a very high 71,xxx S/N, which is close enough to make me wonder if a few went out the door in this configuration.  Very similar to the one in the thread down to the flash hider not being indexed.  I'll post up pics tonight if one of the resident experts has any thoughts on the subject.

ive seen another like this.. here

SP1 I bought at a local show, unknown history, serial number is 16xxx.  Barrel is "CMPC" with "C" and bell on smoothed FSB.  Bird cage FH, type "E" stock, no forge code upper receiver, early contour under port door.  It has scratches all over it, damaged furniture, and noticeable wear on the BCG / FCG.  It came with an edgewater buffer with a similar amount of wear. There is another 1971 listed here that came with a "spare" edgewater buffer so I wonder if Colt ran out of modern / disposed of the edgewater buffers in 1971 SP1s.   :)

I've owned my SP1 for about 6 years. It hasn't had many round fired thru her in about 15 years.

It's ALL original with 'C" in all the normal locations.

SN = SP1052xx

I plan on keeping it a long time.

Thoughts of making it F/A.

I bought a Colt SP1 Serial # SP 85018 many years ago after I came home from the Marines. Every time I take it out and Shoot it, I get asked to sell it. I love this rifle. I use the .22 cal conversion kit with it often.  It looks like new, VERY slightly used. If I was offered something crazy, I MIGHT sell it. I doubt it. I have numerous accessories.  What is a high and low value for just the rifle?
 Thank you. MILTON.

Yep, sometime in 1968.  You can inquire of Colt and get a letter documenting its actual ship date for $25, or its complete configuration/history for $100.

# 230xx would have been manufactured in 1973, I believe.

As for an appraisal, you'd need to post the question in this thread.

Picked this up from a VN vet. He bought it when he got back from 'Nam. 1964 Colt Sp1 #798. Came with riffle, sling, two colt mags, leatherman scope mount (took it off cause no real value). All original as he bought it. Just missing the factory box and manual, no cleaning kit. Gun is used and shows signs of slight useage and some finish wear around the FH, other than that this thing is still in great condition and shoots like a dream. All parts were taken apart sans roll pins to clean and lube. In process of trying to find a display glass case for this gem. Here are some pics for documentation. Please PM me if you wish for pics of any other area or marking locations. This is my first retro and slowly learning what/where to look for.

For SP 01628, here are a few  interesting details. Barrel: between the spares of the front sight:  an "M" and "VP" within an inverted triangle.  At the front of the barrel (bottom):  "12" and a small "s".  An "M" and "P" at the front of the chrome bolt.  A "+" under the ejector port.  These early rifles are really cool and under appreciated.

I just discovered this thread, I have been missing out. I have an SP1 that is exactly 100 units later than yours, serial #157809. I bought it off Gunbroker of all places in 2004 to replace the SP1 I stupidly sold in 1990. That was my first AR and first big mistake selling a gun. I bought it at a pawn shop in 1988. I wish I remembered the serial number from that first AR.

Would anyone happen to know if a colt sporter manufactured in 1978 would've shipped as a complete rifle or possibly as a stripped lower?

All I have is the lower and want to know with any certainty if it was a complete rifle before the ban.

Thanks!
