This SMG is in about new condition and is left over from the 1960s Infantry Board tests at Fort Benning.

Sorry the images aren't a bit better but conditions weren't too favorable in the vault for quality photography. Hopefully, some will be adequate to add to the variation guide.

Handguards. It's not that apparent from the photo, but I think the gage of the sheet steel used in the rear retainer ring is heavier than what is normally seen in the reproductions. Not by much but maybe .010 or .015. I'll try to verify that later.

Barrel markings. Note that the barrel is new enough that the dab of black paint is still present to cover the bare metal in the proofs.

That picture almost brings a tear to the eye.

It would have been nicer to see it about four months ago.

Oh well, it will just make future reproductions I make more accurate. Thanks for sharing!

Unclemoak,

Yeah, sorry about that. I thought about it while you were posting your progressive photos but didn't have time to get in and take some shots until a couple weeks ago. Better late than never!

727s with A2 profile Barrel but no M203 cut exist right? I'm pretty sure I've seen some pictures of SEALs with them?

Any clue as to why the USAF didn't receive coated stocks?  Some argument about it not being necessary because they were going to largely be for perimeter defense?  Or was this just because they were so early in the Colt production cycle that Colt hadn't decided to coat the stock yet?

Air Force carbines get the same buttstocks Army carbines get, which one it is depends on date of manufacture.

Not sure on the years, notice the question mark.  Never seen any evidence that they were used in Vietnam.  Don't know of any source of information on the 653.

When was the 4-position collapsible stock introduced?

I want to build a 723 clone (w/ C7 upper and 1/7 lightweight barrel), and I'm curious if these might have had a 4-pos stock on later models.

Also, was there a point where 4-pos tubes and type-3 stocks would have used the locking nut with the 3 dimples, and not the current type of castle nut?

I understand that there were always exceptions and mixed parts examples with Colt, but I'm curious if the above examples existed in any real numbers.

I don't see this type upper in your listing.  Can you tell me more about it?

It is a CMP Marked barrel, no other markings:

Thanks!

It's not listed because it is not USGI.  It is commercial.

where can I get a set of those carbine length triangle forends and the tri caps on each end we had some of these in Nam and I like to build my retro with them. I think I say so in shotgun news but didn't see any end caps and now can't find the SN it was in. HELP

Little bit of my anal tendancies comming out...
Early USGI side-sling-swivels used pre-2000 have "M16A1" and "M16A2" written on thier perspective sides of the mounting block. The current ones produced by the likes of Bushmaster lack these stamps.

This was a take off from a thrashed Hydramatic A1/A2 rebuild for those that would like to know...

Am I to take the typically to imply that not all original Colt CAR stocks of this type had the raised "N"?

New M16A1 Carbine for $631.26  Plus the $200 tax stamp in 1979. If we only knew then what we know now. From the great info here, looks like i have a standard model 653 carbine.

I have a stack of pics of some "G" marked, Green Mountain produced M4 barrels that I just pulled off if someone wants to host them. Also, is there a place to put pics of some commercial / export Colt guns?

ETA... So I forgot I had taken these on my last go in Baghdad so I figured I'd post them up. Most of what I took got corrupted on an old external but I was able to salvage these.

This is a Green Mountain produced Colt barrel I pulled off of a issued M4A1.

Here is a M4A1 configured gun that wandered in as well. I had a full set of pics but this is all thats left from the same drive.

Any information about T-marks on the flat-top uppers? Is it true that early M4/M4A1 carbine from Colt came without T-marks? I got conflicting info on this. Thank you!

True. I have one that is M4/16inch/1-in9 twist without "T" markings on the upper rail. Front of receiver has just the letter "M" stamped above the gas tube port.

I am confused now. I have a barrel that I think is from a Colt 653 and is marked C MP CHROME BORE but it is dated 1/96. I understand that some 723 barrels had these same markings buthad a 1/7 twist. Any idea how to identify my barrel?

Is it one of the bubbaguns barrels? IIRC, those are replacement 653 barrels and have the later "A2" profile under the handguards.

i do not know the origin of this barrel, i got it from a friend. it would appear to be a replacement barrel based on the date of manufacture. i will take a photo of the complete profile.

Here is the barrel in question. Please note that the barrel came separate from the upper.

Brought back old memories of the 649's and 653's, Commando's and CAR-15's we had at Nellis AFB in the late 1970's and early 1980's, my tenure there.  I think we had some of the commando's, the muzzle break looks familiar. But itt has been over 30 years.

Pardon the dumb question if everyone else already knows this, but can someone tell me what the muzzle device on the XM177E2 'Commando' actually is?

Reading different places I see it called a flash hider, muzzle brake, compensator, even a suppressor. Is there anything inside it like baffles or something?

I figure the reason for building the carbine was to have a short, lightweight rifle, so I'm guessing they had a reason for adding that long thing to the end of the barrel.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the pics. To my untrained eye that looks like a suppressor (never owned one myself).

So are all the extended muzzle devices on the different models similar?

eta: I know how popular suppressors are these days with Spec Ops types, I didn't realize they were used back in the Vietnam era. Compared to the suppressors in use now those seem quite a bit smaller.
