No dust covers? IN THE JUNGLE!?
I'm also surprised they work. ETA: Looks like no forward assist on that last picture too! Bet that thing is in jam heaven!!! |
Let's see, 30 some years in the Laotian jungle, used for everything from homeland securely to getting the evenings dinner. Shooting whatever ammo from who knows where. I bet that thing is just a little outside of Mil.Spec. by now. Dust cover....we don't need no stinking dust cover....all the dust and dirt that has gotten ground into the chamber has honed it out so that it can't jam. Sure, some third world, uneducated, dirt poor, barely surviving individual gets to have a real M16 with a rock-n-roll switch and all I am able to have is a neutered clone that I've put together myself. If that guy would just e-mail me, I'd send him a set of well used hand guards that are way better that the ones he is currently using.

From everything I've heard and read, those Hmong are tough little bastards. Good fighters, brave as hell. Just don't get on their bad side.

I really wish we were still helping those that helped us in Vietnam, at least drop them some supplies and new rifles

Those VN photos are awesome. If you own any originals, you are fortunate. Even more fortunate is having the honor of knowing any of those men.

So when was the M16A1 phased out of service for the A2? I thought they got rid of A1's for everybody but National Guard by the mid-80s (obviously I was wrong).
I joined the Guard in 85 and we had A1s. Went to Benning in 86...A1s for basic...Went regular and to Korea in 88 and we had A2s. We also had the Original SAW that was made in Belgium. |

FITTER (or anyone), do you think this rifle could be what the 606 really is? It seems like it'd be a little pointless to just make an HBAR M16 and stick a removable bipod on there. What do you think? |
Isn't that basically the same concept behind the M15 squad automatic weapon? Just an M14 with a heavy barrel and bipod? |
I would say its far from pointless, especially for a time when most of the world is experimenting with such things. Look at similar products of the time the M15, the FN FAL 50.41/42 and the L2/C2 rifles, what are these if not just HBAR versions of their respective rifles with bipods? The 606 was definitly just an HBAR M16, the bipod probably wasn't even essential. Also, I've heard this before, but I've never heard where people are getting it from, but where is the 611 connection to the HBAR Assault Rifle M2 coming from? |
Thats true..and then you look at the RPK and all THAT is is an heavy/long barrelled AK47 with a bipod. I would just think the bipod on the 606 would be more permanant like the one in the pic I posted. ETA: Okay seriously, if no one else will say it, I will. WTF is up with this thread??? There was like 18 pages on captrichardson's thread and now there's only 3 and barely any pictures!!! What's the deal??? |

The original version of Dawn of the Dead (1978, I believe) has some awesome A1 footage in it. If anyone can find some screenshots............

Some remarkable photos for sure. Anyone have a time line on any of those? Especially the ones with no bolt assists? I am thinking about putting together an early one and dont want to commit heresy.hinking.gif

Has anyone ever seen an XM177E2 with an "improvised forward grip"? So far I've never seen a pic of this but I dont see why they wouldnt do that.

I plan to live forever...so far so good.

Nice pics. Note the anti-walk pins, and the recoil spring guide rod ass'y that unscrews from the rear of the receiver extension tube. Notice the different selector. These open-bolt weapons had no hammer per sé; they slam-fired with an inertial striker which impacted the firing pin. |

best pictures of a M231 yet. Besides my mounted M231 that is ETA: That is exactly how I remember them. No wire sliding stock. And don't catch the skin web between your thumb and trigger finger on those threads! OUCH! I used to have to carry all 6 to the Bradley when we had an alert. |

There's one in the post right above yours. There are a few more in this thread as well. |

XM177E2's with 11.5" barrels? I've only seen them on XM177E1's. |

ahh, sorry. from the looks of this thread I guess E1s were just a lot more common... but I had allways thought it was the opposite. Maybe the guys who were prone to such field expedient mods were more likely to get E1s. |

Outstanding thread!
I noticed on the first page, alot of weapons had what appears to be a cleaning rod taped to the rifle. Is that right? Would that be in the time frame of issues with the weapons at the start?(to punch out stuck cases) I was looking at the Ft. McClellen pics of the late 80's--sure looks like Drill Sergeant Ames on the right side! (12th BN, Fco 2nd Plt-1/86-4/86) Mark |

The "M16" used in th eoriginal Dawn of the Dead was actually a Phillippine knockoff chambered for .32 ACP. You can see the subcaliber mag in the fixed 20 round magwell/

http://img453.imageshack.us/img453/6843/st2nam1967wh7ym0.jpg The date on this image is obviously wrong - due to a number of things... 1) S. Fornier [on the far left] has M-1967 20-round nylon small arms ammunition cases, not issued until late-1968/early-1969 2) D. White has a 30-round cartridge magazine in his M16A1, another late-'68/early-'69 issue item 3) all wear ERDL - not issued until the later part of 1967/early 1968 Now granted all of these guys are SEALs and would have been priority issue for the above three things - so 1968 is possible, but not 1967! I figure by comparisons to other photgraphic evidence the image is probably from 1969. Of course I may be completely wrong! But here is the kicker B. MacCarthy has a Model 607 [with the 2nd pattern moderator]!!! Even if this was 1967 it would be incredible to still find one in service. But even more incredible is my guess that this is 1969 and there is still a 607 still being used! |
I have no idea about the date. It was already on the photo when I found it. Thanks for the critique though. |

Wow, I forgot all about the XM-148.....We had them in our armory until the late 1980s in England. I remember qualifying with one in 1987.
