I know, but the one I got was only $15...I figure my powdercoater can blast it and coat it in semigloss and it might come out pretty close. Worth a try right??

The barrel is a real 14.5", 1/7, Colt, skinny barrel. It came with the Phantom permanantly attached on it. What I would do is send it off to somebody to see if they could take it off without chewing up the threads. If it can be done, it would become a SBR and a real A1 hider. Now that would be an accurate repro, minus the fun switch. Thanks.....Chad |

Here are a couple of retros I built for Vietnam reenacting. The top one is an almost unissued Colt A1 upper. The second is a colt a1 upper, and a fake moderator permanently attached with built in ( but removable) BFA, with aluminum buttstock. A fellow forum member re-parked the barrel and fake moderator, and did the silver solder job for me. He did a great job. The top one is my favorite shooter!

Here is my retro style carbine:
 It is built on a Essential Arms lower I've had for about 18 years. I had first built it into a 20" A2. Its been through a couple of make-overs. Now it sports a Colt M16 upper,Bushy lightweight 16" bbl.,3 prong flash hider,Colt bolt,Colt M16 chrome carrier(notchless),Bushy lower parts kit, Colt M16A1 grip,generic fiber stock. I like that the Essential Arms gray lower is a close match to the Colt gray upper. The color match is better than on my SP1.This is my favorite AR & gets shot the most. |

Finally got the "A1 Rifle Upper Series" finished up this weekend:
This is the "A1 Rifle Upper Collection"  Here is the Smooth/Slick Side  Here is the Forward Assist  Here is the Forward Assist and Brass Deflector  I guess now I will have to go back and start trying to do things like cover all of the different flashiders. Of course I obviously could use some more A1 Lowers if anyone has any extras laying around not being used. Next I can also hopefully finish off the Carbines. Here is another XM16 lower conversion i finished today - i welded over the 'safe - fire' markings on the right side of receiver and i am still a "one trick pony" on these - but i LOVE HOW THEY LOOK !

Richardson : thanks for the complement , and you are the guy responsible for these turning out nice as it was your photos that i used to copy from , So i would love to do one up for you - but i dont have a FFL to be working on / selling lowers - and I fear the Alphabet groups (like Dameon going to church) I live in Illinois and it is almost impossible to get the correct License for this |

Ekie , i have had bad luck with the old no forge code uppers , the aluminum on them seems to be of a poorer quality - more susceptible to cracking and flaking away - i have had to weld repair several that were split in the rear take down pin area - i have examined alot of demilled No forge code uppers (C-& triangle) and if i did not know better i would say that they were cast - or made of a very poor & brittle aluminum and the outside of them- the aluminum appears to "flake" off - like a snake shedding its skin that one that i just completed seems to be a very early one - the rear of the ejection port is even with the contour of the lower receiver - i have only seen this in Capt. Richardsens black & white early 1960's photos -- maybe you could educate me on this ? |

Thanks Buzgun, but I have to admit that I am extremely impressed with your lower work. I have 6 semi-auto A2 lowers that have A1 uppers for work and would love nothing more than to have them worked over like yours. Unfortunately for me I have ZERO machine skills!

One change Colt made to ArmaLite's AR-15 was to go from 7075 to 6061 aluminum. The 6061 uppers and lowers corroded real bad in Vietnam, and Colt had to switch to using the correct 7075 in 1967. Have had plenty of ruined XM16E1 uppers myself. Only have one that survived in decent shape. |
